Chuck Wagon Gang celebrates history of Gospel music

Long before a lot of us were born, The Chuck Wagon Gang was formed. In 1935 Dad Carter and his son Jim along with daughters Rose and Anna began singing. They got their break in 1936. Their first radio break was sponsor singers for Bewley Flour.  They recorded on Columbia Records for 39 years. They were the first group to record the popular song “I’ll Fly Away.” [Editor’s Note: The late Ruth Ellen Carter Yates who recently passed away, filled in for Anna in the 1950’s and began travelling consistently with the Chuck Wagon Gang in the late 1970’s.]

The Chuck Wagon Gang still carries on the tradition today with Anna’s granddaughter Shaye Smith singing alto, and who is also manager and owner of the group.  She is accompanied with Melissa Kemper who sings soprano, Stan Hill on the tenor part and Jeremy Stephens on bass.

They still sing the old songs in the original manner, with Jeremy playing the only instrument guitar, and on occasion he picks up his banjo.  They add a few new songs into the concert.  Often they take audience requests for songs, dragging out the old Chuck Wagon Song Books.  Think about your favorite song they sang so you can request it at their next concert.

The Gang has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl and the Grand Ole’ Opry.  Most recently they released an album with songs by Marty Stuart and they have sung on numerous occasions on his TV show.
