Southern Gospel Radio “Can’t Get Over” Eighth Day’s Latest Radio Release

Written by SGN Scoops Staff on July 8, 2011 – 11:37 am -

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – (July 7, 2011) – Popular Southern Gospel trio Eighth Day continues to see new milestones at radio with their latest single release. Stations all across the country “can’t get over” the group’s single “May I Never Get Over the Cross.”

This ministry-oriented single has been making waves at radio since it’s release several months ago. According to the August 2011 issue of the Singing News Top 80 chart, “May I Never Get Over the Cross” ranked as third most played song in the country.

“We have been stunned by the response that we have seen from this song,” mentioned Eighth Day’s Scott Robinson. “We are so humbled that radio has embraced this song in the way that they have. This song has been such a huge force for us in our concerts and ministry events. We are so excited to see that radio has gotten behind the song as well!”

In addition to cracking the top 5 on the Singing News Top 80, earned a career first last month as the smash-hit single reached the #1 spot on the AbsolutelyGospel.com Top 40 Weekly Chart – the Southern Gospel industry’s most watched weekly radio report. The song went #1 for the week of May 2, 2011 and continued to hold the #1 spot for three more weeks. The four week run at #1 has been bested by only one other song this year (The Dunaways’ “When There’s No Hope, There Is Grace”) and remains Eighth Day’s most successful song to date.

“May I Never Get Over the Cross” was released to radio earlier this year through Spin-N-Motion Promotions. It is the group’s fifth single from their SGN Music Award nominated project Everything Holy. All five singles from that album have reached the Top 40 on both the Singing News Top 80 and AbsolutelyGospel.com Top 40 Weekly Chart.

Eighth Day was recently honored with news that they were named as one of the 20 most played artists of 2010. According to AbsolutelyGospel.com (formerly SoGospelNews.com), Eighth Day ranked #14 on the Top 20 Most Played Artists of 2010 list – in between mainstays and hit makers The Isaacs and The Bowling Family. The list was compiled by the AbsolutelyGospel.com Top 40 Weekly Chart year-end figures.

AbsolutelyGospel.com Announces Nominees for 2011 Absolutely Gospel Music Awards

Written by Scoops Staff on January 21, 2011 – 9:49 am -

Ed: SGN Scoops is humbled and proud of our 2nd consecutive nomination as Pacesetter of the Year!

Gaither Vocal Band Earns Most Nominations Among Artists, while Producer/Songwriter Wayne Haun Lands Most Individual Nominations
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – (January 21, 2011) – The administrators and staff of AbsolutelyGospel.com (formerly SoGospelNews.com) are proud to announce the nominees for the 2011 Absolutely Gospel (SGN) Music Awards. As in year’s past, the nominees were chosen by the staff of AbsolutelyGospel.com and select media representatives. Starting on February 1, 2010, the fans will get a chance to vote for their favorites in each category.

“Our family and site suffered a major blow earlier this month with the death of my wife and site founder Susan Unthank,” mentioned Deon Unthank. “However, it was never her desire that we cease operation after she was gone. We are moving forward because she wanted us to, so while this is going to be a very tough program for us to put on, we know that she is smiling down on us and giving us her blessing from Heaven.”

Chris D. Unthank, the newly named Content Manager of AbsolutelyGospel.com said, “More than anything, we really feel like these nominees represent what Mom loved so much about the awards. For example – looking at our Song of the Year category – you see a nice blending of sentimental favorites like ‘When God Has Another Plan’ and ‘I Still Glory In the Cross’ with smash hit singles like ‘Hold On’ and ‘Born to Climb’ mixed with songs that critics really embraced this year like ‘The Father & the Son’ and ‘When There’s No Hope, There Is Grace.’ Mom was really proud of the nominations this year, and for that reason, we are really excited about this year’s program as well!”

Susan Unthank, Founder of AbsolutelyGospel.com, Passes Away

Written by Scoops Staff on January 5, 2011 – 8:44 am -

SGN Scoops offers our prayers up for the entire Unthank family. Susan’s legacy has always been an inspiration to us and her friendship was treasured.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – (January 5, 2011) – Susan Unthank, founder and Editor-In-Chief of AbsolutelyGospel.com (formerly SoGospelNews.com) and husband of Deon Unthank (Sunday Edition), passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ this morning, January 5, 2011 at approximately 6:30 a.m. CST.

Deon Unthank said, “Our hearts are breaking now more than any other time in our lives. Susan was my wife, confidant, mother of our children, and my best-friend for the last 33 years. She was the back-bone of our family and the site. Susan put more time and energy over the course of the last 15 years in SGN than most people put in in their life. She lived and breathed Southern Gospel for the past 15 years. While our family grieves the loss of this very important member of our family, surely the industry must mourn the loss of one of its most prized possessions.”

Susan was born on November 23, 1955 in Belleville, IL. She and her husband, Deon, founded SoGospelNews.com (now known as AbsolutelyGospel.com) in the mid-90s, and the site quickly became the most read e-zine on the web devoted to Southern Gospel music, its artists, and its fans. The family currently resides in Murfreesboro, TN where they have ran the site for the last 10 years.

Susan is survived by her husband of 33 years Charles Deon Unthank whom she started and raised a blended family with. Their family included three sons, Aaron (Tia) Unthank of Jacksonville, FL, Scott Bandy and Christopher Unthank of Murfreesboro, TN and two daughters, Leslie Hill of Branson, MO and Amy Marie Unthank of Murfreesboro, TN. Susan had five grandchildren, Eli and Anna Cate Unthank and Donovan, Ashlee, and Emma Hill.

There will be no funeral or visitation for Susan. Rather, the family will host a Memorial Service in her honor. Details of the Memorial Service will be announced later.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to help with medical and burial costs via SoGospelNews.com (AbsolutelyGospel.com). Donations may be mailed to the following:

SoGospelNews.com Celebrates the Message of the Gospel and Rebrands Itself as AbsolutelyGospel.com

Written by Scoops Staff on April 15, 2010 – 2:11 pm -

Name Change Takes Effect Immediately

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – SoGospelNews.com celebrated the message of Gospel music last night to a standing room only crowd at its annual SGN Music Awards Celebration in Smyrna, Tennessee.  During the evening, SoGospelNews.com President Deon Unthank announced that effective immediately, SoGospelNews.com would officially be known as AbsolutelyGospel.com.

The name change and rebranding of the popular e-zine, the internet’s largest and most expansive Southern Gospel news site, comes on the heels of the the site’s most talked about and buzz-worthy awards celebration to date. Artists, industry personnel, and fans alike were in support of the change at last night’s event.

“A name change and rebranding for SoGospelNews has been inevitable for a long time, and we knew that it had to represent both the music and the message that we all love so much,” mentioned Deon Unthank. “We feel like the phrase ‘absolutely gospel’ conveys both of those sentiments.”

Unthank continued, “There were many factors that went in to making this decision – such as confusion with other similarly named sites and organizations as well just wanting to focus on the message of the music as opposed to being caught up in Southern Gospel industry politics.”

AbsolutelyGospel.com will not change its focus on Southern Gospel music. However, the name change also gives administrators of the site a chance to feature other artists and individuals in the Gospel music community that fans of Southern Gospel have come to love – such as Inspirational, Christian Country, and Black Gospel artists.

“We’ve always been big fans of other genres of music that seemed to go hand in hand with Southern Gospel,” continued Deon Unthank. “We can now let the readers and supporters of the site in on some other great artists that they may have never heard of before. We feel like ‘absolutely gospel’ showcases the message more than industry parameters.”

The site launched a new layout and logo in January as well as the new tag line that simply said “Absolutely Gospel.” Starting today – the site officially flips over to AbsolutelyGospel.com.  In addition, all of the site’s big events – such as the SoGospelNews Music Fest and SGN Music Awards will be rebranded as well. The Absolutely Gospel Music Fest will take place this July in Smyrna, Tennessee, and the AGM Awards Celebration is already scheduled for April 2011.

“We are just so excited about this name change and all the possibilities that come with it,” mentioned Unthank. “The name may have changed, but we’re still the same group of people and writers that our readers have grown to love. That’s not changing.”

Fans can get to the site by either logging in to AbsolutelyGospel.com or the site’s old domain name at SoGospelNews.com.
