Christmas time for many is a time of being with family and friends, socializing, singing and enjoying treats we may have only once a year. We have gathered a sampling of favorite recipes from our SGN Scoops friends, fans and family. Special thanks to all who contributed their recipes and pictures, and to all of our readers who will enjoy making and eating these culinary concoctions. Have a Merry Christmas…and happy feasting!

My favorite Christmas Recipe is one that we enjoy from the first of November through the New Year Holidays. This delight is good as an appetizer with dip, and as a snack with eggnog and Hot Apple Cider. And it’s great just to munch! I always make two batches in the beginning, since I know they will disappear quickly. Merry Christmas Everyone. May your Holiday be the best ever.
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine, at room temperature
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese, at room temperature
1 1/2 cups cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (more or less, according to your taste preference).
Preheat oven to 300 degrees F.
In a food processor, add the butter, cheese, flour, salt and cayenne.
Process until a smooth dough is formed. Scoop it into your cookie press, fitted with a flat ridged tip. Pipe the dough in 2-inch strips onto a lightly greased cookie sheet.
(Alternatively, refrigerate the dough for 30 minutes and roll on a lightly floured surface into a 1/4 inch rectangle. Cut into smaller rectangles, about 2 by 3- inches, with a pizza wheel or sharp knife.) Bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to racks to cool.

Main Dishes

Joan Walker – proof reader, SGN Scoops
1 1/2 pound ground beef
2 cans beans
2 cups salsa
1 can tomato sauce
2 tbsp chili powder
1 chopped onion
1 cup frozen corn
1 cup shredded cheese
Brown meat and drain. Add meat and remaining ingredients in slow cooker, except cheese. Heat on LOW 5-6 hrs, or HIGH 3-4 hours, add shredded cheese before serving.
Add fresh green peppers for a festive look!

Channing Eleton – artist, musician
My family started a tradition several years ago. After a month of turkey and dressing, sometimes you just want to do something different. One year, I suggested that we do a Mexican dinner for Christmas. Everyone loved it and we’ve been doing it ever since.
The most popular dish of these Christmas get-togethers has been Christina’s Chili Mexico. It’s easy

Channing Eleton

and quick to make and after one taste, you’ll see why the Eleton family loves it. Christina’s dish had become popular at Christmas-time; she was getting recipe requests and questions about what she called it. Up until that point, she didn’t have a name for it. I kept encouraging her to give it a name. Neither she or I had any original ideas that we liked, so I turned to my little girl for wisdom. I asked, “Chanler, what would you call Mommy’s dish that we love?”
Without hesitation, Chanler replies in her cute little five-year-old voice, “Chili Mexico”.
We smiled…it stuck…and that’s what we’ve called it ever since.
2 – 8 oz. packets cream cheese
1 1/2 cups salsa
2 cups chili
2 cups shredded cheese
In a baking dish, spread out cream cheese first. Next, comes the layer of salsa, spread evenly. The third layer will be 1 cup of the shredded cheese. Now, pour in all of chili and spread evenly. Lastly, top it with remaining cup of shredded cheese – spread evenly of course. Bake at 350 F for 30 minutes. Enjoy with your choice of nacho chips! Read more »

Sneed Family

Sneed Family

Frankfort, KY- The Kentucky Governor’s office recently contacted the award winning Sneed Family with an invitation to be a part of the celebration taking place in Frankfort, Ky as they celebrate 100 years of life, service and history at the Kentucky Governor’s Mansion.

Several celebrations have taken place since the first of the year to commemorate this milestone year of the Mansion’s 100 years that included concerts, symposiums, art displays, receptions, garden parties, state dinners, lectures, and other historical/educational experiences. One of the things that Governor and Mrs. Beshear wanted to be sure to include on the list of events was a Gospel music concert.

The concert will take place on Sunday, September 21 in a large tent set up on the grounds of the Governor’s Mansion.

In addition to the Sneed Family other artist scheduled to appear are the Isaacs, Beyond the Ashes, His Heart Quartet, Marlana Vanhoose and Roy Webb. Kenny Bishop will lead the event and serve as host. Roy will be leading a house band to keep the evening moving along. Since Governor Beshear and his family used to sing in their own church many years ago, it is a possibility that they will get together again for a few songs.

The Governor’s Mansion will be open for walk-through tours before and after the concert for the public to enjoy along with getting to meet the Governor and First Lady. The Sneed Family being from the rolling hills of Kentucky are excited to be a part of their home-state celebration.

The Sneed Family will be taking a tour bus for those fans wanting to attend. The Bus Tour includes the concert, a tour of the Mansion and bus ride for $60.00 per person. There is limited seating and also limited time for those interested in the bus tour.

Beyond The Ashes Impacts Canadian Audiences

Written by SGN Scoops Staff on July 17, 2014 – 8:21 am -

btaNashville, TN (July 16th, 2014) – Beyond The Ashes made their very first Canadian concert appearance last month.  The group, who has traveled and sung all across the United States, had yet to take their ministry across the border until now.  The trip proved to be an amazing success and the guys look forward to many more opportunities to visit and sing in the Great White North.
Concert promoter, Richard Daniel, of the Henley Christian Music Festival expressed,  “I have never seen a better first set by a Southern Gospel group. Their harmony was impeccable, their stage presence was welcoming, their instrumentation was spot-on, and their love for the Lord was truly sincere.  They blessed us with 55 minutes of music during their first set alone.”
But, the story gets more interesting.  Daniel continues, “As the first set was wrapping up we experienced a power outage and the alarms went off!  It’s never a dull moment at the Henley.  With the safety of those in attendance at hand, we were forced to evacuate the building until we could determine the root cause of the electrical outage and the reason the fire alarm sounded.  Turns out an electrical line had come down in the vicinity and affected quite a number of homes and buildings…one being ours.”
However, that didn’t stop Beyond The Ashes.  Everyone came back in and the concert continued.  Even with no power in the building, the group ministered with an intimate acoustic set around an antique piano.
Daniel concludes, “And the Lord was there.  I had someone approach me and shared they felt the second set was better than the first. I didn’t think that was possible!  Two sets, two completely different feels, one amazing God!  Thank you, Lord, for allowing us to host Beyond The Ashes and for allowing us to continue to steward this ministry for your Glory and Praise.”
Beyond The Ashes’ tenor singer and ministry leader, Anthony Facello, shared, “We had an absolutely fantastic first tour to Canada.  The scenery was beautiful and more than that the people greeted us with warm hearts and spirits of expectation.  We are already scheduled to return in 2015 and we can’t wait.”
Baritone, Tyler Vestal, adds “I loved going to Canada for the first time.  The people were so warm and friendly and loved the style music we did.  I cannot wait to go back next year.”

Beyond The Ashes: Making You Want To Go To Heaven

Written by Staff on March 6, 2014 – 2:22 pm -

Beyond The Ashes

Beyond The Ashes

Roanoke, Texas

February 28, 2014

By Vivian Belknap

DSC_0963“These guys will make you want to go to Heaven,” exclaimed Bob Wills after hearing the first set of music presented by Beyond The Ashes at Dove Creek Café in Roanoke, Texas, February 28, 2014.  They began by singing “So Amazing,” a great song of praise that set into motion an atmosphere of worship.  Then Anthony Facello, the featured tenor and group owner led the crowd as they sang “Amazing Grace.”

“The Coming of the King,” a real toe-tapper featuring David Staton who was filling in as their lead singer really had the audience engaged. This was the first time David had performed with the group. And wow! His energy was contagious to everyone in the café.

We were blessed to hear “Oh Happy Day,” a very familiar song to southern gospel fans, again featuring David.  “Over for Good,” a song with a modern country feel and “God Is So Good,” featured the great tenor voice of Anthony. His range and control easily makes him one of the best tenor singers in Gospel music. DSC_0969

Anthony then introduced each group member: Casey Shepherd, baritone; Tyler Vestal, pianist and vocalist; David Staton, guest lead vocalist; Anthony Facello, tenor and emcee.  Their energy, both physical and spiritual, was on display with every song. It is very obvious these guys love our Lord and they have made it their mission to go and tell!

The first set was completed with David featured on “Every Knee Shall Bow,” also written by him and recorded by several other artists. Fabulous words: “Bow now, or bow then.”

DSC_0971Every song we heard mentioned Heaven, therefore the comment by Bob Wills at intermission was appropriate: “These guys will make you want to go to Heaven.”

They returned to sing “Glimpse of Your Glory,” another song written by David and “I Can’t Even Walk.” Of course the crowd was singing along on this one too. In fact Anthony had the audience singing often. So it really was a worship experience, not just a concert. Beyond The Ashes has a very unique way of capturing your attention, and holding it to the point that it seems to the listener it’s just you and them.

Another special treat was to hear the piano solo by 22-year-old Tyler Vestal. His talent rivals any pianist in gospel music. In my opinion, he even displayed traits of Howard Goodman, with his hands dancing on the keyboard.  DSC_0978

Beyond The Ashes ended the night by singing “Who Am I,” featuring Tyler, and “No Sin Greater Than Grace,” written by Anthony. This song drove home the strong Gospel message of the love and grace of our Father.

What did we, the audience take away from this concert? Assurance of God’s love, mercy and grace and that Heaven is very clearly in view for those of us who have been born again. There is no doubt that the ministry of Beyond The Ashes is focused on seeing the lost come to Jesus and to bring joy to the body of Christ through their uplifting music and dynamic energy and personalities.  When you have the opportunity to attend one of their concerts, I think you will also leave saying, “These guys will make you want to go to Heaven.”
