Sherri George .. What is your favorite Christmas Memory?

Sherri George

We asked  Sherri George ..  What is your favorite Christmas Memory?

I love Christmas! As I was putting air in my tires yesterday, I remembered the Christmas after I drove home from New York .. and asking for something my parents couldn’t believe I wanted! As I was getting ready to drive home, the dad in the family I was renting an apartment from asked if he could check my tires. Turns out, the tires only had 14 pounds of air in them! In the 15-hour drive home, I could have blown a tire if he hadn’t taken that little tire gauge and checked them for me .. and I didn’t have a cell phone or AAA back then. So when my parents asked me that year what I wanted for Christmas, I immediately said, “A tire gauge!” They laughed, thought I was kidding, and asked again, “Really, what do you want?” I kept telling them, and finally they stopped asking, and looked at each other like their child had lost her mind lol .. When we opened gifts on Christmas Eve, there in a little box under the tree was a noisy little present when you shook it, and I knew it was my tire gauge! Mother and Daddy watched especially close as I opened it, and I really did beam and jump up to hug them. They finally believed that’s what I wanted! lol .. I’ve never driven anywhere since that day without a tire gauge in my glove compartment, or started a trip without checking the air in my tires. I still appreciate Bob and Adele Pastore in Mamaroneck, NY .. appreciate their kindness in letting a kid from Kentucky stay in their home in a wonderful area while I worked for the NBA .. and for keeping me safe by caring enough to check my tires. Guess that’s one of my very favorite Christmas memories! Everyone stay safe and happy this holiday season, and please glance down at your tires before you travel, too! 🙂

We asked  Tanya Goodman Sykes ..  What is your favorite Christmas Memory?

Coming home from a big family Christmas gathering and hearing “Santa” Ho ho ho ing and jingle bells ringing. My sister and I ran through the house searching for him. Just when we thought we had him, he apparently escaped through a window. It was open and the curtains were blowing in the breeze. He had eaten our cookies and left presents under the tree. In all the excitement, my sister, my mom and I couldn’t find my dad to tell him about our exciting adventure. Hmm, I wonder where he might have been?

We asked Pat Barker ..  What is your favorite Christmas Memory?

I was always the first up. it’s Christmas morning and I can’t lie there any longer. I wake my brother up and then get my sister. We all go into my parents room to let them know that we were ready to open whatever santa brought. We would gather at the top of the stairs and daddy would read the Christams story from Luke 2. we would all go down the stairs together and turn the corner to see a room full of toys.

Mom made sure that we opened all the gifts one at a time, taking turns. It usually took around 2 hours to get everything opened then daddy would make his famous Christmas Breakfast! It was time for the grandparents to come over and see all of the presents one by one. The whole morning was filled with laughter and music. The Carpenters and Barbra Streisand would be playing in the background. Christmas movies on the television. For some reason it always slipped our minds that there were stockings filled with chocolate hanging from the fireplace until after lunch. That is when we caught our second wind and played until the sun went down.

This was our tradition until well into my twenties. We loved Christmas morning at the Barker House. Daddy is no longer with us so Christmas will be very different this year. New traditions will overcome the old ones. new memories, songs, and movies will be had. I think that’s how it is suppoesed to be. Time moves on and so do the children of God. Merry Christmas!

Troy Peach .. What is your favorite Christmas Memory?

We asked Troy Peach ..  What is your favorite Christmas Memory?

My absolute favorite Christmas memory happened Dec 10, 2003 when I married the greatest girl in the world, Katy Peach! We had a winter wonderland Christmas wedding, but Katy was the most Beautiful bride! 11 years later I’d do it again in a heartbeat! Happy Anniversary, babe!!!

One of my favorite Christmas memories is a tradition that my family has done since before I was born and still carries on to this day. After we have spent the day Christmas Eve eating and playing games, we all load up in the car and go to our local bowling alley and bowl right up until it’s time to go home and get in bed for Santa to come. The whole family bowls, from the youngest to the oldest. It’s quirky but we all always have a blast. My kids think Santa can’t come unless we bowl first!!

Kyla Rowland .. What is your favorite Christmas Memory?

We asked Kyla Rowland ..  What is your favorite Christmas Memory?

Too much curiosity and impatience is a bad combination. Mammaw always gave me the neatest gifts, so I nosed around her presents more than any.
I was ten years old, picking up, shaking and checking my gifts. It was three days before Christmas and the anticipation was more than I could bear! Then I noticed the gift—Mammaw’s…there was the slightest loosening of wrapping paper on one corner. Ahhh….could it be possible…a sneak preview?

I planned, shifting my eyes from side to side all day, sort of like a hound on a hunt. Then the moment came. My heart pounded in my ears; all the excitement, the anticipation and the risk was making me tremble.
Finally, stealthily, I opened the loosened corner, then another, and another until the box under the red foil paper was revealed. Another side to side glance and suddenly the treasure was in my hands.
Lifting the lid of the Miller’s department store box, my excitement was at a fever pitch, until, at last, there it was—a beautiful little wool skirt and matching soft cashmere sweater. They were a beautiful yellow; my favorite color.

I heard a noise. Caught! No, I’ll just shove it behind the big Victrola. It worked. I found that trying to behave normally was near impossible, so I fled to the bathroom.
Lying awake that night, waiting for my chance to ease into the living room and rewrap my beautiful yellow skirt and cashmere sweater, I began feeling just awful; the guilt was like an anvil on my chest.
Christmas Eve, opening gifts with the family, I feigned surprise, but there was no joy. Guilt had stolen all my joy.

I never enjoyed wearing that lovely gift. In fact, I hardly wore it at all, much to Mother’s dismay. I just couldn’t stand to look at it, for when I did, there was a mortal fear of exposure, and the skirt and sweater felt like a weight on me when I was forced to wear them.
Just the year before, I had given my heart to Jesus, and now, I had disappointed Him, terribly. But, it was a life lesson, and has stayed with me for more than sixty years—giving in to impatience is just not worth the pain.

We asked Debra Perry Reed ..  What is your favorite Christmas Memory?

Probably our little country baptist church’s Christmas play. We didn’t have bought costumes back then and I loved playing an angel….making our costumes probably was my fondest memory other than watching my mom the week of Christmas make her delicious peanut butter balls and coconut balls!
We’d eat them as fast as she could make them!!

Will Lane What Is Your Favorite Christmas Tradition?

My favorite tradition is the reading of the Christmas story of birth of Jesus from the bible with the whole family. This is the real Christmas story and it’s always a great time when we share this with one another.

When I was younger, we would always put up a real Christmas tree. I love the smell of a real tree. Another memory is that my mom and dad always let me open one present on Christmas Eve.Mom would always make cookies to leave out for Santa. Now that I’m older I enjoy decorating my house for Christmas especially on the outside with our life size sleigh and Santa Claus.

Scott Kramer Tell Us One Of The Best Christmas Gifts

Scott Kramer Tell Us One Of The Best Christmas Gifts You Have Gotten.

One of the best Christmas gifts I’ve given over the years didn’t cost a thing and brought back some wonderful family memories. In 1966, my oldest brother had received a portable reel-to-reel tape recorder for Christmas and at a large family gathering that day, he interviewed the relatives by asking their names and ages (of course, this elicited many funny comments from everyone).  At least 30 years had passed when I found one of the old tapes in storage (the recorder was long gone) and after tracking down a reel-to-reel machine, I transferred the tape to a modern format.  As a surprise at Christmastime, I had everyone gather in our family living room and pressed play on the machine.  Needless to say, hearing all of the voices after so many years caused memories to flood back for everyone!

There was a lot of laughter while everyone listened, but there were some tears as well.  Many of the voices of those on the tape were now with The LORD and hearing them talk again brought back many wonderful feelings.  As I mentioned, the gift didn’t cost anything, but it sure brought joy to hear Christmas memories once again after thirty years!
