Ivan Parker

Dreams Come True: a look at the ministry of Ivan Parker

Ivan Parker has had a long, storied career in the Southern gospel music field having sung with several popular groups. He has also been a staple of the Gaither Homecoming videos. Parker currently travels and ministers as a soloist, and is experiencing great success. From an early age, Parker always knew he wanted to sing. He has been blessed to be able to do what he loves and spread the Word of God through song.

Gospel music has been a major part of Parker’s life since the beginning. Parker, while at his father’s church, gave his heart to the Lord at nine years old and from that point, knew he wanted to sing.

“I started singing weekends with my brothers when I was 13 years old,” says Parker.. “My dad was a pastor so I grew up in church. Being from a large family of seven kids, we all learned to sing early in life. My first full time position came in 1982 with the Singing Americans. Then I started with Gold City in 1983 and traveled with them for 10 years. I immediately started my solo career in January 1994, and also started with the Gaithers doing a few tour dates in February of that year, which continued for years on video and concert dates.”

Parker’s unique and powerful lead voice is easily recognizable. His great sound and style was influenced by several of the great pioneers of the Gospel music field.

Parker states, “Through the years of loving Southern gospel music, there are many influences. I have always loved the crooning vocals and personality of Jake Hess, the smooth lead singing of Duane Allen with the Oak Ridge Boys.” He is now a part of that long line of incredible vocalists.

Gold City recorded some of its most popular hits during Parker’s tenure, including: “In My Robe Of White,” “I Think I’ll Read It Again,” “John Saw,” and “Midnight Cry.” The latter song became Parker’s signature.

Following his departure from Gold City, Parker embarked on a solo career in 1994. He has been nominated for, and received, several national gospel music awards. Parker’s music has resonated with audiences all over the world and captures beautifully the message of Christ. His latest mainline release “Dancing In The Rain” features his latest radio single which conveys a timely message.

Parker explains, “The latest radio single is called ‘Take Me To The Cross,’ written by Rodney Griffin. I had been looking for a song that was a mix of patriotic with a Christian message. Without Rodney and I talking, he emailed me this song and I knew God intended this song for me. It was the perfect blend of the two messages that I was wanting. I absolutely love this song!”

It Must Be Christmas when David Phelps sings in December

If the calendar says “December” and David Phelps is ready to sing, it can only mean one thing: It Must Be Christmas!

Phelps, the powerful tenor who is one of gospel music’s most recognizable voices, has been bringing the message of hope through Jesus Christ across the country in his annual “It Must Be Christmas” tour.

We caught up with David after he performed to an enthusiastic crowd at Shelby Christian Church in Shelbyville, Ky. It had been a night of dynamic worship, fun and a challenge to help others.

“It has been great,” Phelps said of his 20th Christmas tour. “We have just been blown away.”

And if the night in Shelbyville was indicative, that reaction goes both ways. The energy flowing from Phelps and his backup band of six musicians and

two vocalists — Phelps’ daughters, Callie, and Maggie Beth — charged a crowd of about 1,000 slightly more than two weeks before Christmas Day.

The tour is sponsored by the KORE Foundation, which promotes the work it does in Haiti, helping farmers become self-sufficient in the poultry business. Midway through the program, Phelps paused so that concert-goers could see a

video of the foundation’s work and be challenged to contribute.

It’s about giving for the One who gave his life. And Phelps makes sure the concert focuses on the season that celebrates God becoming man.

“We drop our non-seasonal music and just do completely Christmas for the month of December,” Phelps says. “It’s a lot of fun.”

Early in the concert, he sang the theme song of the tour, “It Must Be Christmas” and soon after covered Jackie DeShannon’s big 60s hit, “What the World Needs Now is Love, Sweet Love.” Phelps tied the message of the pop song to loving Christ and loving others.

He says the message reaches people who are searching and he says it’s not uncommon for an attendee to share how the concert has affected him. “We are always humbled and honored when that happens that our music can reach someone on such a personal level,” he says. “It’s always just amazing. We hope that we are honorable vessels to deliver the message of hope that is in the songs.”

Phelps says the Christmas season presents an opportunity to share the message of Christ through song. “Definitely. It’s a great time to come together and celebrate renewal,” he says. “It’s the end of the year and it’s starting over again and that’s what Jesus represents too on many levels. I think it’s a great time of the year for everybody, no matter where they are. They may have not stepped in a church all year long, but they love to come together to listen to Christmas music and to celebrate.”

Phelps became a household name in Christian music during his 15 years as a member of the Gaither Vocal Band. He’s coming up on two years of touring strictly as a soloist and says 2018 has been a blessing.

“To this point, it’s been very, very busy, but we’re good,” he laughed.

Phelps says his decision to leave the Gaither Vocal Band has presented an opportunity to expand his creativity. “For Bill, it was a job. I would do what he asked me to do. If he wanted me to sing a certain line, I would do that,” Phelps explains, “and that was wonderful! I enjoyed it and stayed there for a long time. He is a great mentor to me.

“But out here, we get to express ourselves a little more as a soloist.”

Phelps closed his concert with what might be his signature song, “Oh, Holy Night” and a rousing version of “Feliz Navidad.”

But even though the It Must Be Christmas Tour continues through Dec. 21, Phelps says 2019 promises to be another big year. “We have a new video coming out just before Easter. It’s called The Hymnal Project,” he says. “We have been working on that and we will be

touring nationally and internationally. We will be recording, too.”

And come December, 2019, David Phelps will be traveling the country to celebrate Christ’s birth once again.

Christmas Wacky Wednesday from SGNScoops

Written by Staff on December 12, 2018 – 11:05 am -

Wacky Wednesday titleIt’s Christmastime here on SGNScoops and we have a brand new Christmas edition of Wacky Wednesday just for you. This time, our question was: What is your favorite Christmas song and why? Let’s shake our Gospel music snowglobe and see what answers the artists have for us.

Thanks again to our special Social Media girl, Jantina de Haan, for securing these responses for us. We hope you enjoy it. Merry Christmas!

Christmas 2017Mark Byrd: “Mary Did You Know.” I love the way this song has such a sweet flow but tells a story of a mighty King and Savior.

Eric Bennett: “Hope Has Hands” © Phill Cross; I love the way he describes baby Jesus. Hope has Hands, Freedom has Feet; Truth will stand, The Word will speak. The Holy and Lovely will finally embrace. For Love has a Heartbeat and Grace has a Face…”

Triumphant Christmas

Adam Crabb: “O Holy Night,” because it talks about the birth of our Savior and to me, this song is the true spirit of Christmas.

Kingdom Heirs ChristmasJaquita Lindsey: “Do You Hear What I Hear.” I remember trying to learn it on the piano, which I never learned to play the piano 🙂 I don’t have a particular reason for liking it. Just because.

Greg Sullivan: “There’s a New Kid In Town.” I like this song because not many people in Bethlehem knew that Jesus had been born and it focuses on how God became man in form of a child. This child would be the Savior of the world.

Randa Jordan: “White Christmas.” I loved the movie as a little girl, loved Bing Crosby, and it stayed with me all these years. It brings to me the happiest of memories.

Arthur Rice: “I’ll Be Home For Christmas.” The song came out in 1943 during WW2 and it was written from a soldier’s perspective of wanting to be home

Gaither Christmas Homecoming 2016

Gaither Homecoming

with their families for Christmas, even though the last line reveals it wouldn’t be a reality.
The song always reminds me of the reality that so many of our men and women won’t be home for Christmas. And how appreciative we should be for the sacrifice of them and their families, and we pray for their safe and speedy

return home.

Mark Bishop: Wow.. that’s a tough one. It’s hard to narrow it down to one song. For the simplicity of the beautiful message and the melody, it’s hard to beat “Silent Night.” It exemplifies what we should be focusing on at Christmas time, over shopping and gifts. It always makes me a little melancholy, too. Likewise, with Jubilee Christmas 2018. Greater Vision and Legacy Five“Oh Holy Night.” My sleeper choice would have to be “The Little Drummer Boy.” I love the story that it tells and that we don’t need to bring great gifts to Jesus like the three wise men, we only need to give Him the talents that He gave us. But the greatest Christmas gift of all is to give back to God what He gave us, to begin with.

Matt Fouch: I have a funny one…’You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” I love the original cut on this song and it fits the bass range just perfectly. People always smile when they hear you sing it, It’s a lot of fun.

Southern Gospel Sweetheart Autumn Nelon Clark

Autumn Clark of the Nelons

Autumn Clark: “The Christmas song.” Because it is so beautiful and the story it tells.

Scott Peek (DJ of KNMG Radio): “We Are The Reason.” The message can be no clearer. He came to earth as a baby for us. All 33 years of His life were about us His willingness to die on the cross was about us. And it all started that first Christmas morning…”WE ARE THE REASON!”

Harley Madden: “I’ll Be Home For Christmas,” I think maybe my favorite song for Christmas. And the reason I say that is, back in 1985 my sister passed, and I miss her everyday. But now I think about it, she made my mom a promise for Christmas that year. And that was: She would be home for Christmas. Even though we may not have got our wish for her to be at her earthly home for Christmas, she was made new in her Heavenly home. Sitting at the feet of Jesus. I can’t wait to get to Heaven, to be able to see her again and give her a big hug.

IVAN PARKER IS CHRISTMAS DREAMING OCTOBER 5

IVAN PARKER IS CHRISTMAS DREAMING OCTOBER 5

IVAN PARKER IS CHRISTMAS DREAMING OCTOBER 5

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Difference Media recording artist and one of Southern Gospel’s most lauded soloists, Ivan Parker, is set to release Christmas Dreaming October 5. Produced by Garry Jones (Canton Junction, Brian Free), the collection offers a nostalgic take on six timeless holiday favorites and four beloved carols.

Parker’s signature vocals are showcased atop big band horns, jazz piano riffs and lush orchestrations as he seamlessly delivers a range of Christmas classics, from “There’s No Place Like Home For The Holidays” and “It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas” to “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” and “What Child Is This,” among others.

“It’s my hope that this collection presents the spirit of Christmas morning—the peace that brings us closer together at the holidays,” said Parker. “‘It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year’ and ‘There’s No Place Like Home For The Holidays’ take me right back to my childhood and Christmas with my family. And the newer classic, ‘My Grown Up Christmas List,’ is so fitting for the times we live in now. With much confusion and division in the world, it was important for me to have a song about love, peace and the restoration of joy. Forget the problems and the things that divide us and let’s go back to what the season is all about.”

“Most of all, I want people to understand the real reason for Christmas,” Parker emphasizes. “Carols like ‘What Child Is This’ and ‘It Came Upon A Midnight Clear’ point us back to the manger—these are the songs that present Jesus, the true Hope of Christmas.”

POINT OF GRACE SERENADES THE SEASON WITH SING NOËL OCTOBER 20

POINT OF GRACE SERENADES THE SEASON WITH SING NOËL

Iconic Group Partners With LifeWay Worship For New Christmas Set

NASHVILLE, Tenn.— Sing Noël, the highly-anticipated, new recording from Platinum-selling, GRAMMY®-nominated Point of Grace, was released October 20. Heralded for multiple classic Christmas recordings spanning a storied career, Sing Noël is Point of Grace’s fifth seasonal set and their LifeWay Worship debut.

Featuring 10 new arrangements of beloved carols and Christmas favorites, the project was produced by Kent Hooper and Phillip Keveren. Opening with a bright, modern rendition of “Angels From the Realms of Glory,” which showcases the group’s signature harmonies, additional highlights of Sing Noël include a “Mary Did You Know?” and “What Child Is This?” medley; the bluegrass-tinged hymn “See Amid the Winter’s Snow;” and the worshipful “Fear Not,” among others.

“It has been several years since we have recorded a Christmas project, and this one is really special,” said Point of Grace’s Shelley Breen. “It has a central focus on the carols of Christmas. It was so fun to sit around together in the beginning stages of the record with our old Baptist hymnals and realize just how many classic carols we had not recorded. Our producers and LifeWay Worship were amazing in helping us find our own ‘spin’ on these songs. I feel like the spirit of the season was captured perfectly! Now, we can’t wait for our amazingly loyal fans to share in our excitement.”

“Sing Noël has been a wonderful Christmas journey for all of us at LifeWay Worship,” said Mike Harland, Director of LifeWay Worship. “As fans, we love it. As friends, we are so proud of who they are and what they have created here. And as ministry partners, we are blessed beyond description to share in the creation of this Kingdom project with true servants of the Church in song.”

Dusty Wells: It Really Is Okay!

Written by Staff on December 23, 2015 – 2:16 pm -

Dusty Wells headshot mainCan you believe it’s December??? So friends, that means it’s almost Christmas! That incredible season where people from almost every part of the world have some kind of celebration no matter what they believe.
It’s also that special time where so many of us decorate to the utmost, listen to beautiful Christmas carols and songs, and share cards with one another. We send and share Christmas pictures, gifts and special Christmas-New Year letters detailing all that has taken place in the past year.
There are gorgeous trees with all kinds of twinkling lights and decorations galore, with presents in all kinds of gorgeous wrapping paper and bows, placed strategically under the tree. There are outside lights in every color and giant blow-up figurines of all shapes and sizes, making even the dullest of homes gleam with personality. The kitchens are filled with way too much candy, baked goodies and delicious treats. Brightly adorned Christmas sweaters make many of us smile and want to take pictures of them, and even secretly wish we were brave enough to wear them.
Dusty Wells Christmas imageWe attend Christmas concerts, programs, musicals and events where many of us cheer on those special “kids of all ages” in our lives. Some of us even love the fairytale story of “Santa Claus,” making it a fun time of laughter and joy to those around us. There are Christmas parties, get-togethers and dinners all begging us to join in the feasts and festivities and usually adding a few extra pounds to each of us. And the list of all that takes place in this month goes on and on and on.
It all leads up to that special day, December 25th where we will celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, JESUS CHRIST.
Yes, I am one of those crazy-wacky ones who absolutely loves, adores and makes the most of the “Christmas Season.” I do almost all of the above-mentioned things and even then maybe more. I tell every store clerk, restaurant worker, UPS and postal folks – actually almost every one I come in contact with – a loud and hearty MERRY CHRISTMAS. Yes, I celebrate the season of Christmas and I want others to know how special it is to me.
You know why???
If you could’ve seen where Jesus Christ picked me up from and found me… I was in the deepest, darkest pit and darkness was all around me. A life of abuse, junk, crud and debris filled so much of my life. But some very special people took time out of their own busy lives and schedules and introduced Jesus to me. My life has never been the same. Oh, yes, life has dealt me many blows and I’ve had my own share of struggle and heartache and yet in the midst of all I’ve walked in, I’ve always made certain that I take time to celebrate Christmas with all the traditions, fun, and merriment; always knowing that Jesus in all of His greatness and love is the Reason for the season. Nothing or no one will ever change that belief to me. I enjoy so much of the season, and I always celebrate Him.
Merry Christmas friends! Take time to slow down and savor the season, and know you are so loved and so valuable. And that it’s okay to enjoy the Christmas lights, Christmas sweaters and The Carpenters Christmas Portait CD. It really is!
Go share His love with someone.

By Dusty Wells.

BALL BROTHERS’ CHRISTMAS TOUR

ROBERT’S CONCERT RAMBLINGS – BALL BROTHERS’ CHRISTMAS TOUR

The Ball Brothers wrapped up their 20-concert, ten-state Christmas tour recently. Their last weekend included their home church in Rock Springs, GA and Columbus, OH. The group currently consists of brothers Daniel and Andrew Ball, brother-in-law Chad McCloskey and Jon Epley.
IMG_2797When the group stated back in Illinois, it was four brothers including Steven and Josh. They toured with their Dad who was an evangelist  from 2001 through 2005. Dad started pastoring a church in Chickamauga, Ga and they moved south. In 2006, the brothers started singing full-time and have appeared on main stage at NQC,  Gaither videos, Silver Dollar City and Dollywood.
They began doing a Christmas tour in 2007 and have continued each year since. Brother Steve had to leave the group because of a hearing loss and Josh later left the group for a Church staff position. They also had Cody McVay who was a brother-in-law as their pianist. Cody left the group when he was offered a position at Dr. Charles Stanley’s church in the music department.

IMG_2822I had the opportunity to attend the Ball Brothers’ Christmas concert in Rock Springs. This was a great evening with a good mixture of secular and religious Christmas music. They kicked off the evening with a video presentation of the Ball Kids, where the kids were asked questions, which turned out to be very funny at times.
The Awana Childrens Choir sang a song, and the Ball Brothers then hit the stage with “Go Tell It On A Mountain.”  Some of the other songs they included were: ‘Joy To The World,” “O Holy Night,” “Jingle Bells,” The Grinch song and “Mary Did You Know.” Daniel brought Steven and Josh to the stage and introduced them, explaining about the health issues that both of them had, and thanked everyone for praying for them.

The group used a beautiful set with several types of lights and when they sang, “Let it Snow,” the snow machines worked full time, blowing snow all over the stage with Daniel kicking it and picking up some and wiping in on Andrew. As usual, Daniel and Andrew drew lots of laughs with their comedy during the program. They also had a game in the program called, Know It or Throw It. Participants  from the audience were invited to the stage and they drew balls with gift cards attached out of Santa’s bag and were asked a Christmas question.  If they knew the answer they got the gift card, if they didn’t know the answer the ball was pitched into the audience and the person that caught it got the gift certificate.

IMG_2820The Ball Brothers closed the program after a brief intermission with several Southern Gospel songs and then sang their signature song, “It’s About The Blood.”  You can keep in touch with The Ball Brothers on Facebook or their website www.theballbrothers.com.  If you are interested in having the group they are booked by The Harper Agency.
