John Schneider is Recycling Grace

Written by Staff on August 14, 2019 – 1:37 pm -

John Schneider is Recycling GraceWhen he was just eight years old, John Schneider would entertain his friends and their families with magic shows. He knew then he had a love for performing and that would carry on through his teens and into adulthood. This predilection for acting led to the role of Bo Duke on the TV series, “The Dukes of Hazzard,” a job that would change his life and bring him fame.

Reflecting back on the series 40 years later, Schneider says, “It’s hard to imagine anything has been 40 years really, but what a special time in my life.” The friendships he made during the production of The Dukes of Hazzard” would carry on through present day.

In 1981, at the height of the popularity of his show, Schneider released his debut country album, “Now or Never.” His first single from the album, a cover of the Elvis Presley song, “It’s Now or Never,”peaked at No. 4 on the U.S. Country Billboard charts and remains the top charting Elvis cover to date, by any artist. Schneider had found another avenue to tell stories, through music, and he knew that was what he was destined to do. He enjoyed great success during his country music career with four No. 1 singles on the Billboard Country Charts and 10 top 10 hits.

John Schneider is Recycling GraceSchneider was tapped for the role of Jonathan Kent on the CW Network series, “Smallville,” in 2001. The show followed a young Clark Kent growing up in Smallville, Kansas before he became the hero, Superman.

“I was the ‘Uncle Jesse’ of that series,” Schneider muses, as he reflects back on the character portrayed by Denver Pyle on “The Dukes of Hazzard.”

“What made “Smallville” such a great show was the emphasis it made on family and how important family is,” says Schneider. “In my opinion, it is the best portrayal of the Superman mythology of any other show or movie.”  He credits that to the creative team of Alfred Gough and Miles Millar who created and produced the “Smallville” series.

John Schneider is Recycling GraceThe lack of family friendly programming available today bothers Schneider. “It’s not a decline in the morals of everyone who creates shows or movies. It’s about business. If the demand for those types of shows is there, then people will make them because it’s a business and they create these shows to make money.”

Schneider believes the market is there for family friendly movies and shows. As a result, he is creating them in his John Schneider Studios. “We have a new movie we are making called ‘Christmas Cars.’ It’s the story of a man trying to save his farm by selling diecast replicas of the cars he used to drive 40 years ago,” he says. “A lot of my story is in this movie.”

Kristina Cornell joins elite writing staff of SGNScoops

Kristina Cornell

Kristina Cornell

SGNScoops Magazine and Website has several great writers on staff, from those who interview artists to create feature articles, to those who dig deeply into their faith and creativity to craft opinion pieces that we call “devotionals.”

Joining the team is our new devotional writer, Kristina Cornell. Starting as a vocalist with “Victory Express,” Kristina developed into a sought-after songwriter, lending her talents to the fields of Christian and Country music. She has now come full circle, using her talents solely for the Lord.

Kristina is a prolific writer and has a lot to share about her life, her faith, and her Lord.

Let’s get to know Kristina a little better!

What is your first musical memory?
I was four years old, I was cutting out Valentines with my mom. She was singing, like always, and she began to sing “Oh How I Love Jesus.” I was singing along with her, “because He first loved me;” I continued into a verse that she had not heard, “First, He died on the cross for me, first, He died on the cross for me, first He died on the cross for me, but now He’s living in me.” My mom asked where I learned that verse. I told her, “I made it up.” She hugged me so tightly, I knew it must have been a good thing based on her reaction. I continued to write as if it were as involuntary as breathing.

When did you begin singing professionally? Tell us about this point in your life.
I was 14 when my family began to travel about 150-200 dates per year. My family continues that ministry, Victory Express. We sang on the Jubilee At Sea cruises with Maurice Templeton’s, “Templeton Tours”. We attended the NQC annually singing in various showcases. We sang in hundreds of fairs and festivals. But my favorite was when we sang in churches that we knew did not get a lot of Gospel Music. I LOVED the tent revivals. My father is an evangelist, so he would preach also. Those were fundamentals in my life in every facet. I learned things about business that I would utilize my entire adult life. I learned that like it or not, there is a political side. I learned sound and recording, I grew tremendously as a songwriter and vocalist. The greatest lesson that I learned was how to allow the Holy Spirit to have His way in every service. I learned that it is no longer I that lives, but Christ who lives in me.

When and why did you shift to country music?
I have always had such a passion for songwriting. My family moved to Nashville when I was 22. I was determined to become a successful writer. I had already written with Ronny Hinson, became a charter member of the Southern Gospel Songwriters’ Association (thanks to Phil Cross), (and) I believed it was my destiny. And write I did. I was signed to Daywind Publishing by Wayne Haun (when he started as head of publishing) within three months of my moving to town. After I left Daywind, I continued writing over the next several years with some amazing talents and it was not always gospel music. I wrote with Billy Dean and Jimmy Lee Sloas, some phenomenal talents. I was writing with Dave Gibson and he asked if I would sing a demo for him because he wanted to pitch it when he took the stuff that we had written to the labels. That song was “Little Red Balloon.” When Mike Borchetta heard it, he signed me to a country deal without even meeting me in person. He was into the vocals and the song, and wanted to release that song to country radio as soon as possible. So, we recorded that song first and while they shipped it to radio we recorded the other nine songs, six of which I co-wrote with some of the greatest writers. I made a deal with Mike that my music would not step over any of the boundaries of my beliefs. I refused to sing about things that I would not do. “Little Red Balloon” went on to chart in the top 40 and the video was nominated as GAC’s video of the year. It also crossed over into gospel markets.

Tell us about your faith. When did you first begin to believe in Jesus? How has your faith grown throughout your life?
I was saved at a tent revival when I was four. I will NEVER forget that night. The evangelist, Brian Ruud, was from Canada and he was so charismatic about the Lord. It was exciting! I wanted whatever he had. His music team had a real B3 that they carried with them. I remember the way that Leslie cabinet looked (it was huge) and the sound was even bigger! The music was not just good but authentic. These people clearly believed in what they sang and preached. We were there that night till after midnight, as they took time to pray with every single person. I got my first little Bible from Brian Ruud, it was one of those little New Testament versions. Throughout grade school, I would take that Bible with me and tell the kids at the playground about Jesus. The school called home many days trying to explain to my parent that I could not do that. Finally, in the sixth grade, I was taken from the public school system and began Christian schooling. I learned so much about the Lord through the next six years. I had teachings about Jesus at home and at school. It was great! I thank God for the foundation that was laid in my life. My parents sacrificed for my Christian education, and I cannot thank them enough. As I went into adulthood, even still today, those foundational truths remain in my heart. I admit, after a really heinous trauma in my life, I walked away from the Lord. I say it that way because I literally was so angry with Him that I told Him that I was walking away from Him. The Psalmist, David said it best when he said that he had hidden the word of the Lord in his heart, that he might not sin against God. The words that were written on my heart did not leave, no matter how far I tried to walk. Ultimately, I realized just like every other believer, that my only hope is in Jesus. Nothing fills or fixes but Him. My journey has been tough so far, but in my weakness, He is my strength, my ever-present help in times of trouble.

Kristina Cornell

Kristina Cornell

What made you desire to write about faith?
I made a commitment to the Lord that if He would allow me to continue to write, and if I would ever have an opportunity to sing to anyone again, I will only write and sing Christian music. It is a personal decision. I do not think there is anything wrong with writing and singing other genres, as long as it does not condone sin. For me, I have been delivered so many times by the hand of God that any creativity that I have I only want to give back to Him. I really have nothing else to say, as I have learned that I have nothing of significance to offer of myself. I am just like everyone else, in need of a Savior. I write from my heart, I write devotionals, stories, songs, messages, even starting on a book, and all I have to offer is Jesus and what He has done in my life!

What is your favorite scripture right now and why?
This is really hard for me because I CLING to many of them. The Lord spoke into my spirit, while I was asking to draw more closely to Him. “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33. Those words etched into my soul because shortly after that prayer I descended into one of the most brutal valleys of my life. Some days all I could do was cry out to God. I sought Him, I actively pursued Him. I needed His provision and protection, I needed His consolation and comfort. He added all I could ever need and so much more!

Thank you Kristina for opening your life and your heart to SGNScoops and all of our readers.

Nashville, Tenn. (December 1, 2018) – This morning, Larry Gatlin of legendary country music group Larry, Steve & Rudy: The Gatlin Brothers, released the following statement on the passing of former United States president, George H.W. Bush:

“I first met president George H.W. Bush in 1964 when Steve, Rudy and I sang for his congressional run. He lost. Later when he became vice-president, I walked up to him in the White House to say hello. He stuck out his hand and said, ‘Hey Larry Gatlin… you’re one of those little snotty nose kids who sang for my campaign in Odessa in 1964.’ I said, ‘Yessir, I am.’ He said, ‘It worked out better this time. We won!’ Rest in peace, old friend.” -Larry Gatlin

The Gatlin Brothers became close friends of the former president, performing on his behalf on the campaign trail, at his inauguration in 1989, and multiple times at the White House and the historic Ford Theatre in Washington D.C.

Bush passed away on Friday, November 30. He was 94.

I Serve A Savior by Josh Turner Is Available Now

Live Performance DVD Available Now, Portion Airing This Week as Television Special Hosted by Gospel Legend Bill Gaither

Nashville, Tenn. (Oct. 26, 2018) –  Named one of the “most-anticipated country albums” this fall by USA Today, multi-platinum-selling country singer Josh Turner’s I Serve A Savior released today to critical acclaim, “bypassing the Saturday-evening revelry of most modern-day country,” as stated by Rolling Stone. The collection of hand-picked hymns, alongside brand-new originals and live recordings of some of Turner’s most memorable hits, I Serve A Savior “complements the singer’s baritone voice. All the while, [Turner] manages to put his distinct spin on the classics” shares Sounds Like Nashville, adding “I Serve A Savior provides a much needed message of hope to the listener… and proves that [Turner’s] gospel album was well worth the wait.”

For I Serve A Savior, Turner collaborated with GRAMMY® Award-winning producer Kenny Greenberg. Greenberg calls the album “a vocal tour de force” with a bluegrass flare. “This is where he comes from and who he is. This is what he grew up listening to and it became this labor of love.”

Named One of USA Today's “Most-Anticipated Country Albums” This Fall, Multi-Platinum-Selling Country Singer Josh Turner’s I Serve A Savior Is Available Now

Making I Serve A Savior was a dream come true for Turner, with his faith as the basis of the project, as he told The Tennessean in an upcoming Sunday cover story. Additionally, the gospel project is one that fans have been asking to hear for years and “adds new meaning to the songs that have defined Turner’s spirituality while allowing him to contribute his own voice,” says Taste Of Country. Bringing a new dimension to the GRAMMY® nominee’s already acclaimed career, “Turner has outdone himself” with his latest faith-based endeavor according to Digital Journal, who called each track on the project “warm, inspirational and unique. It is evident that this studio effort was a labor of love for Turner.”

In addition to the 12-track studio project, Turner has released a complementing 90-minute live performance DVD featuring a special interview of Turner with gospel legend Bill Gaither, a performance with Turner alongside his wife, Jennifer, and their four sons, and more. The DVD has been edited to air as a one-hour television special hosted by Bill Gaither, which will air this week on numerous networks across the U.S. and Canada, and will continue to air throughout the fall.Click here for more information on networks and air times.

Talking with People.com, Turner discussed working with his family on the album, stating, “I wanted to have a moment on this record where I could feature [my kids] and my wife. It’s kind of wild and I think it might be the beginning of something special because all four of my boys seem to have a strong musical talent. Whether or not they pursue that as a career, time will tell. I don’t know what the Lord is calling them to do.”

Named One of USA Today's “Most-Anticipated Country Albums” This Fall, Multi-Platinum-Selling Country Singer Josh Turner’s I Serve A Savior Is Available Now About Josh Turner:
With his rich, deep voice and distinctive style, MCA Nashville recording artist Josh Turner is one of country music’s most recognizable hit-makers. From his 2003 Platinum-selling debut Long Black Train to his 2017 Billboard No. 1 release, Deep South, Turner has scored multiple GRAMMY®, CMA and ACM Awards nominations and received six Inspirational Country Music Awards. As one of the youngest members inducted into the Grand Ole Opry, Turner has sold more than 8 million units, topped more than 1.5 billion in global streaming and populated radio with such memorable hits as “Hometown Girl,” “Would You Go With Me,” “Your Man,” “Time Is Love,” “Why Don’t We Just Dance” and “Long Black Train.”

With his latest, I Serve A Savior, Turner adds an exciting new dimension to his already acclaimed career.

I Serve A Savior is a thoughtful gospel collection that finds Turner’s rich, distinctive baritone paired with timeless classics including “Amazing Grace,” “How Great Thou Art” and “Great Is Your Faithfulness,” as well as introducing originals including the title track, “I Serve A Savior,” and “The River (of Happiness),” written by his wife, Jennifer, and their eldest son, Hampton.

Turner is a disciple of traditional country music, a mentor to up-and-coming artists, and one of the youngest members of the Grand Ole Opry.  Turner has been an Opry member for over 10 years and he recently reveled in his 150th performance on the famed Opry circle.

The Hannah, S.C. native has been songwriting and performing since he was a child, and in support of music education, he created The Josh Turner Scholarship Fund to assist students interested in pursuing a future in arts and music. MARK209 Announces the Return of Joe Armstro

MARK209 Announces the Return of Joe Armstro

(Nashville, TN)  – Joe Armstrong is returning to MARK209 to fill the bass position.

Many of MARK209’s fans will recognize Joe as the original bass singer for the group, featured on their “From the Heart of Nashville” and “Grassroots 1” CDs.  Joe has been no stranger to Gospel music outside of MARK209.  His resume includes a stint with The Stamps Quartet and membership with such classic groups as The Florida Boys and The Blackwood Quartet.  Joe has been traveling with MARK209 over the past two months on an interim basis meeting fans and learning the program and he recently agreed to take the position full time.

With the return of Jimmy Reno two years ago and now Joe Armstrong, MARK209 is featuring their original lineup.

“Even after Joe left our band in 2012, we’ve stayed in touch and enjoyed catching up when we would run into each other on the road.  Just hours after the word got out that we were looking for a bass singer, I received a call from Joe telling me he’d like to return to MARK209,” says Jym Howe, the group’s lead singer.  Tenor singer, Nathaniel Justice adds, “Joe is a favorite among those who have heard his powerful bass voice and one of the most personable men you will meet in the music industry … Joe never meets a stranger.  And it’s arguable that Joe is the lowest bass singer in the industry today.  He’s been consistently hitting the bottom note on the piano with us each night.”
Jym finishes with, “We feel the name Joe Armstrong should be a household name for any Gospel music fan and we are thrilled that he is back with us.  THE BAND’S BACK TOGETHER!”
Joe and his wife Dena reside in Maplesville, Alabama and he is now busy with the arduous task of learning all of MARK209’s material and preparing for their highly popular Christmas tour which begins in New York on November 30.
Make your plans to see the original MARK209 at a concert near you by checking their tour schedule.

McCarver Delivers Inspirational Follow Up to First Top 80 Chart Hit

Nashville, TN (November 7, 2017) – Cody McCarver knows a few things so he decided to put those sentiments in a song. “What I Know,” from Cody’s release, Rise Up, has been released to radio and is going for adds now.
“The song “What I Know” is my favorite track I wrote for the new CDRise Up. I didn’t expect it to be a single but I am humbled that it is. I love the pure message of the song and it’s what I’ve learned since I have been living my life as a Christian,” Cody McCarver stated.
The release of “What I Know” comes on the heels of Cody’s first Singing News TOP 80 song, “Rise Up,” featured on both southern gospel and country radio outlets, in the United States and internationally.

Cody’s project, Rise Up, is available now on iTunes and all digital outlets.

ABOUT CODY MCCARVER:
Cody McCarver’s emotion-filled voice displays a life full of heartache and lessons. Yes, when you hear Cody sing, you know he has a story to tell.
Raised in the mountains of Spencer, TN, Cody’s first musical influence was in his home church. Even as a young child, Cody loved music and became the church piano player before the age of ten. It’s that musical connection to faith that has helped Cody through dark and troubled times, including the imprisonment of his father and his death inside a jail cell.
Cody spent over a decade with country music super-group, Confederate Railroad, eventually leaving to start his own solo career. This career was extremely lucrative with numerous accolades – including three number one videos’ on CMT Pure Country and earning the title of Independent Artist of the Year from Music Row Magazine.
Throughout his career, Cody has shared the stage with legends such as Charlie Daniels, David Allan Coe, Merle Haggard and more. His solo career saw his music topping the charts and even being featured in several motion pictures, which led to McCarver acting in several western films. His solo music has featured guest appearances by Colt Ford and The Oak Ridge Boys’ Richard Sterban.

The bright lights of fame and fortune brought many enjoyable things but it also exposed Cody to a very dark side. “Here I was with everything I could imagine,” states Cody, “but something was missing and I was miserable. So, I started filling that void with Jack Daniels, who became my best friend, every single day.” Cody’s life began to spiral out of control. “I was headed for death,” says Cody. “I knew something had to change…so I went to church.” Cody searched and found joy in his renewed relationship with God. Cody says: “God let me know that He never left me and He was with me the entire time.”

Today, Cody shares his story anywhere and everywhere he can – and there are no signs of slowing down. In fact, Cody’s just getting started!
McCarver lives just outside of Chattanooga, TN and is an ambassador for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America, an organization that is extremely close to his heart.
