Kelly Bowling – A Mother’s Legacy

Kelly Bowling and the Bowling Family

Kelly Bowling and the Bowling Family

Each year on the second Sunday of May our minds recall that special woman in our lives called Mother. There is no way to describe the impact a mother has on her family whether good or otherwise, a mother’s presence is felt and missed. I recently spoke with one of Gospel music’s mothers, Kelly Bowling, on life with her family on and off the road.

Kelly Bowling

Kelly Bowling

Kelly Bowling is no stranger to traveling with family, singing and ministering across this country as she traveled with The Crabb Family for many years. She grew up, met and married Mike Bowling all while traveling with her mother and family in a bus across many highways and states.
Kelly recalls traveling with her mother, Kathy Crabb Hannah, in those early days of married life. “Hope Bowling was the first grandchild born that traveled with us. It was very special having my mother there, to help with Hope and time we spent together with Hope playing dress up with my mother’s make-up in the back of the bus. Watching my mother create a close bond with her was very special to me.”

Kathy Hannah still boards the Bowling bus from time to time and travels with Kelly, Mike and the girls. Kelly says, “Not too much has changed, my mother helps me with the kids and she gets to be the fun one now with less pressure on her. I have a greater respect and appreciation for my mother now that I am the mother of this group and responsible for day- to-day requirements of this ministry.”

The Bowling Family

The Bowling Family

By Tina Wakefield

There is no way to describe the impact a mother has on her family whether good or otherwise, a mother’s presence is felt and missed. I recently spoke with one of Gospel music’s mothers, Kelly Bowling, on life with her family on and off the road.

All of the Bowlings

All of the Bowlings

Kelly Bowling is no stranger to traveling with family, singing and ministering across this country as she traveled with The Crabb Family for many years. She grew up, met and married Mike Bowling all while traveling with her mother and family in a bus across many highways and states.

Kathy Crabb Hannah

Kathy Crabb Hannah

Kelly recalls traveling with her mother, Kathy Crabb Hannah, in those early days of married life. “Hope Bowling was the first grandchild that traveled with us. It was very special having my mother there, to help with Hope and playing dress up with my mother’s make-up in the back of the bus.

Kelly Bowling

Kelly Bowling

Traveling with three kids is not an easy life and there are many sacrifices and obstacles to overcome. Confined in the space of a tour bus for extended time there is no privacy and the lack of space can be a challenge. Kelly says that for a mother, you worry about your kids missing so much that other children get to experience. “For a ministry family [the children miss the] Friday night outings that their friends go on, weekends at the park, at a playground or a movie. You feel guilty at times that your children are on a bus traveling to the next church to minister. I want my girls to not feel deprived of these things but appreciate a life of ministry, of reaching others in need of salvation, hope and encouragement. This life is a calling and I have built a lifetime of relationships on the road which I still have, and I can see that for my girls.”

The Bowling sisters

The Bowling sisters

To help the Bowling girls with the life on the road, Kelly plans special outings with each daughter. “Being on the bus together we don’t get a lot of one on one time with each other, so when we are home I’ll take them out at times alone to shop, or a movie, or just time to spend with each one alone.” On the bus the kids are usually on their Ipad, Ipod, teasing their cousin who travels with them or flipping from bunk to bunk. Time on the bus is family time with everyone just being silly, joking, and playing around.

In October of 2014, when an opportunity opened for a singer with the Bowlings, thoughts about how to fill the space presented a challenge. Then the unexpected happened: Hope Bowling, the oldest of Mike and Kelly’s three girls, decided that she would like to fill that position. Kelly says, “I didn’t see that coming. I had hoped that she would one day, and I knew she could. We were thrilled.” The joke between Mike and Kelly is, “She works cheap!” Hope Bowling fills the position well and is a very talented and anointed young lady.

bowlings2I asked Hope why she decided to join her family in ministry and she replied, “I love to see the faces of the people and how the lyrics of the songs touch them. I was excited when my parents presented the opportunity to me.” At 15, she will be one of the young artists to watch and see what God has in store. We could literally take the scripture from Proverbs 22:6 that says, “train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” Mike and Kelly Bowling are truly training up their girls in a ministry/Christ-centered life of giving of themselves. This lifestyle did not come by chance because the same could be said of Kathy Hannah who instilled the same lifestyle of ministry in Kelly and her family in their early lives.

Bowling Sisters

Bowling Sisters

This thought brings about the scripture from Proverbs 31 that states, “Her children arise up and call her blessed.” Hope states that she admires her mom for her anointing and hard work ethic, and says, “she is someone I look up to.” I asked about her grandmother Kathy and she said that her go-get-it attitude, work ethic, and genuine honesty with people, are traits she admires.

If Hope Bowling joining the family ministry is any sign of what is to come, then Gracie and Katelanne Bowling are worthy of our attention and prayers. I asked 11-year-old Katelanne what is the best and worst thing about traveling with her family. She says that she loves going to new places but the downside is that she doesn’t get to spend time with her friends as much. Katelanne is not sure about what she wants for her future yet but loves to sing with her sisters, especially the song, “It Is Well With My Soul.” She looks up to her mom for lots of reasons but says that cooking is not one of them, which this brought lots of laughter from all those listening. The best dish would have to be Kelly’s lasagna and the worst would be spaghetti. Katelanne would love for everyone to know that her grandmother Kathy really likes to talk to people and loves Facebook. I asked her if there was anything she would change on their family bus and she replied, “Yes, my x-box and a private room.”

2014-12-05 20.37.54 editGracie is the youngest of the three girls and perhaps the most vocal. Maybe you have seen the Gracie Show that Kathy Hannah posts on Facebook. If the Gracie Show is a taste of what is to come, we all better pay attention to her. When I asked Gracie what she wanted everyone to know about her mother she says, “She is a really nice person and really pretty.” Gracie says about her grandmother, “She is not afraid to say what she thinks.”

2014-12-05 22.27.42 editGracie says that traveling is great because they get to visit lots of different places, her favorite of which is the beach. She says that she gets to go on cruises, which she enjoys. She is not sure what she would like to pursue in life yet but would love to be on Broadway. She would love to be able to travel to New York City to ride the subway and see the tall buildings.

Who knows what the future holds for the Bowling girls as they travel and minister with the family. One thing is for sure; after speaking with Kelly is that they are instilled with the Christ–centered life and the value of sowing into others. Proverbs 31:31 says of a mother, “Give her the fruit of her hands and let her own works praise her in the gates.” Kathy Crabb Hannah sowed into the life of her daughter Kelly Bowling, and Kelly is sowing into the life of her daughters Hope, Katelanne, and Gracie.

“Even though the accolades are nice and appreciated, the focus must always be on God at all times,” says Kelly. “Mike and I have the same priority and values. God must be the focus and center of all that we accomplish.”

2014-12-05 22.43.29 editA life on the road is not an easy task but one that Kelly Bowling has embraced with her family. Her girls will debut their first CD this year, The Bowling Sisters and Kelly is now reaching out to speak at ladies’ events along with Kathy who is currently conducting ladies’ retreats. I am very excited to watch this family as God unfolds His plan in their lives. I am convinced that this is a family who strives to hear from God and accomplish what He puts in their spirit with total honesty and conviction in a time when compromise is an easy path to follow. I encourage you to contact The Bowling Family at www.bowlingsonline.com

Perspective: A Fresh Look at The Bowling Family

Written by Staff on September 30, 2014 – 12:20 pm -

DSC_0018By Melissa Joy Wright

Google defines the word per-spec-tive “perspective” as a particular attitude toward, or way of regarding something; a point of view. Google defines the word fresh “fresh”as recently created or experienced, and not faded or impaired. Let’s take a look at The Bowling Family with fresh perspective. This family group has deep roots in Southern Gospel music, and The Bowlings combine a beautiful bridge from a solid past to a youthful future.

Youth is the perfect word to describe the newest full time member of this mixed quartet. Hope is the 14-year-old daughter of Mike and Kelly Bowling. This sweet little face is becoming a vocal dynamo! She sings with a big voice that commands the audience’s attention.   “Hope brings a fresh outlook and youthful zeal to our group,” says Troy Peach. Both Mike and Kelly agree with Troy.   “She has a young perspective that is rare in our music,” Kelly mentions. Mike agrees that Hope’s young talent is an attribute to the group’s ministry. Hope shares, “I’m an avid reader. I like reading the Bible and fiction.” She has a humble spirit and shared her desire to be a Godly woman who also has a funny side!

DSC_0020Speaking of humor, Troy Peach is this group’s funny guy. He always has a smile on his face, and as Hope relays, “Troy is a people-person, who likes to interact with everyone.” Troy started his gospel career playing drums for his family group when he was just five years old. This is a man who wears many hats, and does it successfully. He helps manage the group, is an audio expert who runs sound flawlessly, and sings well. His voice and style convey a passion for the truth of the lyric he is singing.

Troy believes in the true faithfulness of God. He says, “The Bible tells us God was tempted in all points, so He understands us, no matter what we get ourselves into.” Troy is married to the beautiful Katy Peach and the two share twin boys Clayton and Shelton. Last summer at vacation bible school, both boys accepted Christ as their personal savior at the age of seven years old, and Troy says it is the highlight of parenting, watching his children maturing spiritually. Mike and Kelly both agree that Troy is a very hard worker, who never quits and has an excellent work ethic. Troy strives to be the ‘Real Deal’ that is the same guy once, twice, and every time you see him.

DSC_0028Kelly conveys the same thought. She wants to be the ‘Real Deal’: genuine. Everyone who knows her confirms that she definitely is. Kelly grew up singing with her brothers and sister as a member of the Singing Crabb Family, and now with her husband and three daughters, she is carrying on a legacy of ministry.

Speaking affectionately of his wife, Mike says, “Kelly has a heart for God and ministry. She loves the Lord and is a great wife and mother.” Kelly’s desire is that all people know that Jesus loves them, and God has a plan for them no matter who they are or what they’ve done. Hope says, “My Mom is the one who will go pray with someone, even if it stops the concert set.”

DSC_0039Kelly is a sensitive woman who cries every time she hears the song, “Wind Beneath my Wings”, and her fans find her down-to-earth personality sweet, and very easy to talk to. Troy speaks jointly of this couple saying, “Mike and Kelly have a very special anointing on their life since the bus crash in July of 2010. God has touched them, and they don’t take this anointing for granted.”

Mike Bowling has had the touch of God on his life since he was very young. In fact, while he was in the 10th grade, his parents allowed him to leave public school and go on the road full time with the LeFevres, singing gospel music, while accomplishing home schooling. He’s been singing and sharing the love of God for 33 years.

Hope says of her dad, “He’s the face of our group, the one everyone knows.” Mike has a soulful voice that allows the message in a song to penetrate the heart of the listener. “He brings wisdom and experience to our ministry, and as a man, he is even-tempered and loyal,” says wife Kelly. Mike has a tremendous love for his God, family and friends, and wants people to know how much our faithful Lord loves and cares for them. He is proud of all three of his daughters, watching them grow in the Lord.

The two youngest Bowling girls, Katelanne and Gracie, join their older sister Hope on stage and sing as The Bowling Sisters. Their harmony is perfect and their sweet little spirits are uplifting to the listener’s soul. Kelly beams and says of her daughters’ singing for the Lord, “It is the most rewarding experience in my life, and my cheeks hurt from smiling so much just watching them.”

“It is my goal in life for my kids to know Jesus and have that personal relationship with Him,” says Mike. “All three of the girls have accepted Christ as their personal Savior, and my desire is they will always serve him.” Hope loves singing with her little sisters, citing Gracie as the little star that makes everyone laugh and Katelanne as the sweet one that always brings a smile.

Not to be forgotten is the quiet demeanor of John Jeffrey. John helps run sound and plays the piano for the group, while doing the bus driving duties as well. He has a kind, smiling face, and is always quick with a warm greeting for fans. He doesn’t miss a beat changing the set list in the middle of a concert to accommodate a request, or the leading of the Holy Spirit in a different direction.

The Bowlings are not just an anointed southern gospel group, but they are a well-practiced team. They have a beautiful sound, great songs, wonderful stage presence, and an attitude of ministry and worship that is both genuine and humble.

We hope you will attend a Bowlings concert at a venue near you. For more information, visit http://www.bowlingsonline.com/ /

Crabb Family’s New Recording Hits the Street and National Airwaves

Written by SGN Scoops on February 8, 2012 – 2:19 pm -

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—February 8th, 2012—Together Again (Gaither Music Group), the all-new studio recording from the multiple award-winning Crabb Family, hit shelves and online stores everywhere this week. The ten-song release, produced by lead singer and GRAMMY® Award-winning solo artist Jason Crabb, offers fans the first new music from the popular siblings in several years.
An extensive tv and media campaign surrounding the new release began this past weekend on networks including GAC, GMC, RFD, FamilyNet, TBN, INSP, CTS, CTN, Grace, Legacy, FFE, Miracle and Airtime. Gaither.com is currently featuring an exclusive interview with the entire Crabb Family. Members of hearitfirst.com can log on, starting today, to get a FREE download from the new release.

Coinciding with a recent, limited run of national tour dates that the group has just completed, Together Again was recorded with a vocal approach that was musically different for the group, which traveled together for around 15 years, garnering national attention and recognitions.
Apparently, the new style is working as the release has already been described by one reviewer as the group’s best album to date–a big statement given the siblings’ history of hit songs and glowing reviews.
Together Again includes three songs written by the award-winning country writer Neil Thrasher (who co-wrote Jason’s solo hit “Somebody Like Me”) in addition to tunes written by such industry pacesetters as their father, Gerald Crabb; Sue C. Smith; Lee Black; David Moffitt; Gina Boe; Don Poythress; Ronnie Freeman; Stephanie Lewis and Caleb Collins. The recording also features two songs co-written by Jason alongside longtime friend Sonya Isaacs Yeary, country tunesmith Jimmy Yeary, as well as Carl Cartee and Barry Weeks.
“If There Ever Was a Time,” the first single from the new release, is currently playing at radio stations nationwide. The song, a pick hit at several southern Gospel charting stations, just hit the Top 10 New Release chart for February according to reporting stations for The Singing News Magazine.
Siblings Jason, Adam, Aaron, Kelly and Terah, known as The Crabb Family, took the Christian music industry by storm in the 90’s with their signature brand of country-tinged Gospel, live stage band and powerhouse musical arrangements. The Crabb Family took home 11 GMA DOVE Awards, garnered three GRAMMY® nominations, and blurred the lines between Christian music genres with recordings and nominations ranging from bluegrass to black Gospel.

“Crabb Family Celebration Tour Announced”

Written by Rhonda on November 20, 2010 – 5:26 am -

NASHVILLE, Tenn.   After the Crabb Family’s retirement in 2007, Jason, Kelly, Aaron, Adam and Terah chose to pursue separate musical paths. In 2010, the siblings are a music lover’s dream representing an array of accomplishments. These include Jason’s Grammy win this year, Aaron’s newly found position as worship leader of the highly acclaimed Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, TX for Pastor John Hagee, Adam’s break out “band” that landed GMC’s 2008 “Genre Album Of The Year” and Kelly and Terah’s collaboration with Mike Bowling that claimed a record-breaking four #1 songs from their debut album. This family represents multiple styles with their familiar pure hearts that fans have loved since they were young, Kentucky kids new on the Nashville music scene.

“It’s amazing what comes to mind in the middle of the night, and then once we gather in the backyard at a family cookout, those 4 am thoughts turn into a distinct plan.  A quick family celebration results in smiles and thoughts of going out and singing as a family again.  Scheduling is tough, but when it’s family, we make it work.  So, here we go!  Starting Thanksgiving weekend the Crabb Family will be in a city near you,”  said Jason Crabb.

Terah Penhollow continued, “How much better can it get?  Family, singing and seeing all our friends again.  I am so excited!”

“No matter how much time we spend apart, the minute we are back together again, it’s as if time stood still and we are right back in that little country church where we learned to sing together.  Those were some of the best times of our lives and we want to recreate the excitement of those early years,” Kelly Bowling commented.

“It’s a wonderful thing to do something just because you want to.  I feel like we have all grown spiritually and have come into our own while we have been apart, but there is always something about going home and hitting the stage with my family and remembering how it all began.  There is nothing like it,” stated Aaron Crabb

Adam Crabb added, “I hope every person who has been a part of our ministry, since we were kids, will come join us for these concerts that will take us back to our Crabbfest days. I think this will be a road version of Crabbfest! ”

Jason Crabb concluded, “I challenge you to come out and join us!  We promise Crabb Family music, Crabb Family worship and who knows, maybe a surprise here and there.  You won’t be disappointed!”

The fact that this will be Terah and Kelly’s return to the road, following their bus accident on July 1st, makes this tour all the more special. These kids have praised their way through many storms in the past several years, now they are ready to invite you to praise the Lord along with them!

For more information, call 615-595-7500.  For a complete listing of Crabb Celebration dates, visit www.thecrabbfamily.com <http://www.thecrabbfamily.com> .
