Leaving Louisville: Twenty Years of NQC

Written by Staff on September 9, 2013 – 11:42 am -

nqcnewlogoChange is always hard and the NQC Board made a bold step twenty years ago when they announced the move from Nashville to Louisville for Gospel Music’s favorite yearly event.

From scheduled sings on the Belle of Louisville to concerts in the downtown square; from impromptu songs in various area restaurants to special gatherings in local hotels; from Elvis sightings to Uncle Sam in the Exhibit Hall, there are many unforgettable moments for the Gospel music fan at NQC.

As a writer for SGM Radio and SGN Scoops, I’ve had the opportunity to interview many interesting people at NQC.

Many of these artists wouldn’t have the time to sit with an interviewer during an ordinary concert setting. NQC is also the opportune time for fans to also talk with their favorite singers. What a great opportunity it is to attend NQC and be able to sit down with the makers of the music!

SGM Radio and SGN Scoops would like to extend a special thank you to the board of the National Quartet Convention for continuing on a tradition that began many years ago, for making the necessary decisions for the growth of the festival and for embracing artists, fans and industry alike as we celebrate together our music and our faith.

We look forward to 2014 in Pigeon Forge!

****As a fan who attended the first Louisville NQC, I have many memories of the National Quartet Convention at Freedom Hall. I’m sure our readers do as well, and I invite you to submit these memories for posting here this week. Please submit your NQC thoughts and pictures to lorraine@sgnscoops.com

“Memories” with Libbi Perry

Written by SGN Scoops on November 29, 2012 – 10:27 am -

 “Memories With Libbi Perry Stuffle”

Written by Laura Kennedy

SGNScoops Magazine, July 2012

One of six children, Southern Gospel’s most beloved alto singer recently allowed SGN Scoops the privilege of some talk time. Singing, as Libbi is quick to share, has been her whole life; “I had just turned seven. We started singing on Christmas day, 1970 after the loss of my 13 year old brother, Johnny, that previous July 30, 1970. The Perrys decided to go full time after the loss of my baby brother George who was also 13 at the time of his death on June 5, 1982.”

The Perrys, in the mid 1980’s, signed with former pianist for the Happy Goodman Family, Eddie Crook on his Morning Star Records label. Libbi later met and married Tracy Stuffle who would then become the group’s longtime bass singer. For over 40 years and throughout various personnel changes, the group has not only been well received, but is one of the leading Mixed Groups in the industry today.

In my opinion, receiving awards and recognition is evidence of diligence to a skill and craft.  In southern gospel music, the most important ingredient to the success of any writer, musician, or vocal artist is the rich indwelling and guiding force of the Lord Jesus Christ.  And when the Lord allows, an artist can touch and deeply affect the spiritual walk or even awakening of their listener. Libbi is that kind of artist. And as such, has been awarded Singing News Fan Awards for the 2005 Female Vocalist and Alto Singer Of The Year and the 2006 Alto Singer of the Year.  While at the 2009 National Quartet Convention, Libbi was voted Favorite Alto in the 2009 Singing News Fan Awards. Both she and The Perrys received 11, Top 5 nominations in the 2010 Singing News Fan Awards for Favorite Artist, Mixed Group, Male Vocalist, Female Vocalist, Horizon Individual, Young Artist, Alto, Lead, Songwriter, Album, & Song. And most recently, Libbi was awarded Singing News Fan Awards, for the 2011 Favorite Alto of the Year.

Clearly, the traditional tone and strength of Libbi’s voice is what makes her a fan to many. When asked how that particular quality speaks to her, Libbi replies; “It overwhelms me! I never dreamed in a million years that people would even consider my singing anything to be awarded for. To say that I am honored would be an understatement!”   Read more »

NQC BOARD NAMES NEW MEMBERS

Written by SGN Scoops on April 22, 2012 – 4:11 am -

Louisville, KY – The National Quartet Convention Board of Directors has announced the addition of two new board members. Gospel music veterans Mark Trammell and Jim Brady have been named as the most recent additions to the Board. “These two men have years of experience in the Southern Gospel Music genre, and we are excited that they will bring valuable insight to the Board and the goals we have for future events,” states Clarke Beasley, Executive Vice President of the NQC.
Trammell brings nearly four decades of experience to the Board, having performed with such popular groups as The Kingsmen, The Cathedrals, Gold City and Greater Vision before launching his own group, The Mark Trammell Trio, which later evolved to the Mark Trammell Quartet. Recognized for his rich baritone vocals, Trammell is also a dynamic speaker and evangelist.
Brady has become recognized as one of Gospel music’s most prolific songwriters, having written more than 100 songs, recorded by the most popular groups and soloists. Over the years, he has won the hearts of industry members and fans alike with his smooth vocal ability and warm personality. Jim first began singing with his musical family at the tender age of five and has become one Gospel music’s most loved vocalist. After traveling with The Shulers for nearly a decade, he  joined the very successful Booth Brothers in 2002.
Trammell and Brady will prove to be essential as final preparations are being made for the 55th Annual National Quartet Convention, which kicks off  September 9-15, 2012 in Louisville at the Kentucky Fair & Expo Center. Visit www.nqconline.com, as a complete schedule of events

Debut Release From Mark Trammell Quartet In Stores

Written by Rhonda on August 27, 2010 – 7:42 am -

(Hendersonville, Tenn.) August 26, 2010-The newly formed Mark Trammell Quartet is excited to announce the release of their newest Daywind Records’ project, Testimony.  The addition of bass singer Pat Barker gives this former trio the traditional quartet sound that Southern Gospel music was founded on, all while staying true to the style that Mark Trammell Trio fans know and love.

Testimony, produced by Lari Goss, includes favorites such as “How Long Has It Been” and “Calvary Medley,” as well as new songs that listeners are sure to love, including “One Drop Of Blood” and their new radio single, “Testimony.”

“One of the true highlights of my career is the release of this new project as the Mark Trammell Quartet,” comments Mark Trammell.  “Testimony was produced and arranged by my long time friend Lari Goss, and it was pure joy working with him once again.  I just love the way he can masterfully write music around a lyric that will tug at your heart.  After all, in our music, it’s still all about the message.  Without it, we are just more noise to the world.  We hope you are touched by our first major release as the Mark Trammell Quartet.”

Daywind Records is based in Hendersonville, TN, and is distributed worldwide through New Day Christian Distributors.  Daywind is home to such great artists as Greater Vision, Sisters, and the Booth Brothers, among others.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Please Welcome The Mark Trammell Quartet!

Written by Scoops Staff on January 13, 2010 – 9:47 pm -

Hendersonville, TN (January 12, 2010) – George Younce said it best, “Mark Trammell is a ‘quartet man,’ period.” After two years of soul searching as the craft of the traditional gospel quartet became scarce, Mark Trammell is pursuing his life-long dream of having his own traditional male gospel quartet.

“All I’m really doing is returning to my roots,” stated Mark. “I was trained by some of the greatest men to ever take a quartet to the stage and I’m very excited about MTQ endeavoring to raise the bar when it comes our music and being able to minister to, as well as entertain our friends and fans.”

Mark has always been about singing and not gimmicks. He reminds us that Glen Payne and George Younce taught him that at the end of the day if you want to be successful in stirring the hearts of the people, you MUST sing TO their hearts, and not just their heads.

Mark admits that there was a motive behind his decision to announce the change before knowing who the bass singer was going to be. While he openly states that this was not necessarily a “religious” awakening, he did want the right man for the position. In making the announcement the way he did, the prospects came to him, instead of him going on a search to find the right man.

The right man is Pat Barker (pictured). Pat has developed a reputation as one of today’s smoothest bass singers. Pat will be joining Mark Trammell, Dustin Sweatman and Joel Wood at the beginning of February 2010.

The quartet will be in the studio soon working on a summer release from Daywind Records.

Daywind Records is based in Hendersonville, TN, and is distributed worldwide through New Day Christian Distributors. In addition to the Mark Trammell Quartet, Daywind is home to such great artists as Greater Vision, the Perrys, and Legacy Five, among others.
