SPEER TRIBUTE

SPEER TRIBUTE

We Love Our Southern Gospel Music History, (WLOSGMH) is one of Facebook’s most unique groups. The page features a host of exclusive videos, audio clips, photos, stories and memorabilia being shared on a daily basis. Those exclusive tid-bits are what really allows the group to share the history of southern gospel music came to be one of the most faithful and popular Christian music forms.

In the many years since the Franks Stamps Quartet, there have been some true iconic performing artists. The Blackwood Brothers, Statesmen, Sunshine Boys, Stamps Quartet, Weatherfords, Cathedrals, LeFevres, Sego Brothers and Naomi, Goss Brothers and the list could go on and on.

Yet one family group really stood out for many years as a true leader in the field, The Speer Family. The family had several resurgent periods of popularity that marked gospel music. When the group disbanded in 1998, seventy six years of history were logged in the annals of gospel music.

With the recent deaths of Ben Speer and Rosa Nell Speer Powell, the last original performing family members, there has been a void in gospel music. Yet their impact lives in the lives of those adopted family members who are still singing and ministering.

This year, the WLOSGMH Convention runs March 26 and 27, 2018 to the Murfreesboro, TN Clarion Hotel Ballrooms.

On Tuesday evening the WLOSGMH Convention will feature a special SPEER FAMILY TRIBUTE.  This special tribute to the legendary Speer Family is planned to highlight some history of the legendary family. Some vintage footage of the Speer Family through the years will be shown. Former Speer Family members will grace the stage including Joyce West Black, Ann Downing, Jeanne Johnson, Sue Dodge, Linda Robinson Sholar, Karen Apple Young, and Daryl Williams, They will be singing some of your favorite songs. Doug Young and Gene McDonald will join this all-star lineup of talent to create that unique Speer Family sound. Tom Powell, Rosa Nell Speer Powell’s son, will be conducting a choir featuring many of the great songs written by Dad Speer. Several Speer Family members are expected to be in attendance. You don’t want to miss this once-in-a-lifetime treat!

Songfellows Quartet Personel Changes

Written by SGN Scoops Staff on February 15, 2011 – 3:44 pm -

Brad Smith

Nashville-TN-  Homeland Records recording artists The Legendary
Songfellows Quartet announced today some exciting changes that are taking
place in the group effective immediately.

Songfellows Quartet owner Bob Jones stated “Just like the Bible tells us,
there is a season to everything.  We all go through those seasons and
seasons bring about changes.  Oftentimes those changes bring excitement
and new beginnings and at this time with some members leaving to pursue
other interests, God has brought us new personnel that are no strangers to
Gospel Music Fans nationwide.  So joining Baritone Ed Hill and me are two
familiar faces.  On each end of the quartet will be, Tenor Rick Strickland
and Bass Brad Smith.

Strickland who currently resides in Greenville, TN is a multi-year veteran

Rick Strickland

in Gospel Music who began his career in 1983 with The Singing Americans
during the era when “I Bowed On My Knees and Cried Holy” was a multi-award
winning song, that became a signature song of The Singing Americans
throughout the rest of their career in Gospel Music. Most gospel music
fans loved the classic renditions Rick sings of songs like “Glory Road”
and “You’ll Never Walk Alone”. Rick has spent over 27 years with other
artists at the tenor position such as The Sound, The Kingdom Heirs and The
Stamps Quartet.

Smith comes to the Songfellows with a fine resume as well to his credit.
Brad has performed with groups such as The Impacts, The New Speers, and
The Statesmen.  Brad and his family make their home in Goodlettsville, TN
and he shares the excitement and is ready to get back to seeing Gospel
Music Fans again.

Ed Hill who has been the baritone vocalist for the past year with The
Songfellows is enjoying his time too getting reacquainted with many of the
people that have supported him throughout his 40 plus years singing with
groups such as The Prophets, The Statesmen, Singing Americans, and The
Masters V who later became The Stamps Quartet.

The Songfellows Quartet was based in California for over fifty years and
moved to Nashville in 2006.  They now tour and appear in concerts all
across the nation.  Their style is traditional four part, big full harmony
Southern Gospel Quartet singing.  “There are not many quartets like us
left, the days of the Statesmen, Stamps and Cathedrals have past but a
love for that sound and feel in gospel music has not” added Bob Jones,
“with this line-up of veteran  singers, the folks who missed those great
groups will get a taste of what it was like in the ‘Golden Era’ and
discover the music that launched this great style of Gospel Music.” You
can also catch the Songfellows Quartet’s live performances on the
nationally syndicated Television show Brush Arbor Jubilee.

The first weekend that Gospel Music fans will be able to witness this new
lineup of The Songfellows will be next weekend Feb 10th through the 13th
in Indiana and Illinois  in cites such as Jasonville, Monmouth, Decatur
and Harrisburg.  .  For scheduled listings visit
www.brusharborjubilee.com.  More information on the new lineup of the
Songfellows Quartet will be made available soon at www.songfellows.net or
www.homelandentertainmentgroup.com
