Beyond the Song with Jantina Baksteen

I connected with Tim Bates of the Bates family, and Tim generously agreed to join me for this edition of Beyond the Song.

Jantina Baksteen: Can you introduce your family to the readers of SGNScoops?
Tim Bates: The Bates Family consist of husband and wife, Tim and LaDonna, and their 12 year old daughter Laykin.

JB: Your family has a long history of singing, starting from 1985. Can you share something about that?

TB: The Bates Family was actually started by my twin brother, Tony, and I, back home in the southern part of Ohio, in a town called West Portsmouth.

Tim Bates

JB: What awards have you been nominated for, and won over the years?

TB: Well, we have only won just one award. It was a Diamond Award, back in 2016, for a song called, “Louder Than The Nails.” It won for the short video of the year. We have also been nominated a couple of times for Trio of the Year. We are so humbled that people would feel that way about us to actually cast votes for us.

JB: Your daughter is joining you now as third part of your ministry. Does she sing on every event at which you’re invited to sing?

TB: Yes, Laykin is singing with us on every date now; she’s doing the full sets with us. What an  incredible blessing to see her grow in her gift that God has given her. She works hard every week on her craft. We believe in working in the spirit of excellence, and when it comes to ministry she understands it is hard work but also fun and very rewarding.

JB: Do you have a testimony to share?

TB: When I was four years old, I accidently shot myself in the chest with a .22 caliber pistol, point blank in the chest. The bullet severed an artery in my heart, gun powdered my lungs, damaged my voice box, then lodged in the base of my neck. The doctors told my family that if I survived, I would never be able to speak above a whisper. To make a long story short, God’s people prayed and I received my miracle of being able to speak. God restored me and here I am, 35 years later, still singing and preaching for him.

JB: You just released a new song to radio, called “Somewhere Prayin’.” You wrote this song, can you share how this song came together?

TB: Yes, our new single “Somewhere Prayin’,” will drop at radio at the end of the this month. I wrote it from an evangelistic point of view. Through out the year, we conduct revivals and conferences, and there are a ton of broken people that speak their heart to me when they respond to the altar calls. And to hear what they’re going through, and being able to help pray with them to help them make it to victory, is the very essence of why we do what we do. It’s a very tender song, with a great message that is sure to reach the listener right where they are at. It has touched so many at our live concerts already, and we are very grateful for that.

JB: What is your story about the importance of praying in your life?

TB: Prayer is the greatest weapon we have against the enemy. It knows no bounds and without it a Christian cannot be effective. To be able to listen to God for instruction for family and ministry and just daily life is essential to having success. God’s word says that a righteous man’s feet are ordered by the Lord, how would you know which way to go without prayer.

JB: What’s ahead for you in the near future?

TB: The future for the Bates Family has always been to strive to reach more and more people for the cause of Christ. Through radio, live concerts, songwriting etc., wherever there are new doors that will open for us, we will go and share our hearts and let God do the rest.

JB: Where can we find your ministry on the web?

TB: You can find us on the web at www.batesfamilygospel.org . We would love to come and be a part of your event or church service.

Thanks to Tim Bates for sharing from your heart. We hope you enjoy this song, as sung by the Bates Family

Thank you so much, Tim Bates, for sharing your ministry. May God continue His blessing on the work you do.

NEW Ladonna Bates Update

NEW Ladonna Bates Update

Here is the latest update on our friend LaDonna Bates…. Praise God!

(From “Update Page” yesterday)

LaDonna had another great day today. She is now able to squeeze with her right hand! She is also walking during therapy without her cane!

We had a great visit with her tonight and her spirits were fantastic. It’s so great to hear her laugh and joking around with Tim, Greg and Steve.

Below you’ll find a collage of her room. It is so amazing to have her surrounded by reminders of all the support and people whose lives LaDonna has touched.

Please continue to pray for Tim , LaDonna and all The Bates Family.

Praise God!!! Keep Praying and Sharing!

New update on LaDonna Bates:

Update: God is so good! This morning the nurse walked into the room and LaDonna said “Good morning” clearly! Once Tim got to the hospital he said she became wide eyed and gave him a big smile! She has not said anything else at this point but she is obeying all commands given by the doctor; moving her head left to right, etc.

They have taken most IVs out but she is still pretty sedated. The doctors are doing an EEG to measure brain waves shortly. They also said a lot of swelling has already gone down on the left side of her brain which is fantastic!

Update on LaDonna Bates…

Written by scoopsnews on June 21, 2016 – 5:53 am -

A page has been created on Facebook to keep up with latest on LaDonna. The page is entitled “LaDonna Bates updates.”

Here’s an update this am:

Update: They currently have LaDonna heavily sedated and will keep her that way for another day or so as her body recovers from the surgery. They did a post surgery cat scan which showed the bleeding that was causing the swelling has stopped! They expect the swelling will take a few days to go down.

The doctors will continue to run tests to determine the cause of her stroke during the next few days as well.

Our family cannot thank everyone enough for your continued outpouring of love and prayers. We are believing in God for a total healing!

We have created this group as a way to keep everyone informed and updated on LaDonna Bates and her recovery. We would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of love, texts, messages and prayers.

At this time LaDonna is still unable to communicate verbally and is slow with physical responses. The stroke affected the right side of her body but she does seem to have some feeling there.

Amber Wolf asked her for a thumbs up and LaDonna shot her left index finger up which is fantastic.

The doctors are continuing to run tests and we will keep this page updated as we get results.

From Yesterday:

Please pray for LaDonna and Tim Bates. LaDonna had a stoke early this morning.

They are at the hospital now. We spoke to TIm this morning and he asked that we put this on every prayer chain out there.

Will you pray? Please also share with your church prayer list.

We at SGN Scoops pray that God will wrap his loving arms around this precious couple as He begins to heal LaDonna.

Thank You!

Bates Family Christmas fun!

Bates Family Christmas

Tim Bates (The Bates Family)

We recently asked Tim Bates of The Bates Family to share a special Christmas Memory with us and this is what he had to say.

One of the things that I love to do at Christmas time is to gather around the piano at moms house and just have a jam session singing all the great Christmas songs. The really cool part is that anyone can join in with us whether you can sing or not, who cares, it’s all about hanging out with family and having fun and celebrating the birth of Jesus. Here is a video of the original Bates Family doing that very thing. We try and take advantage of every moment to get to sing together like we used to before I got called to preach and my bother and his wife started a church in northern VA. I love moments like this. Merry Christmas everyone and Happy New Year!!

SGN Scoops’ Fast Five with the Bates Family

Written by Staff on November 9, 2015 – 9:57 am -

Bates Family

Bates Family

Welcome to SGN Scoops’ Fast Five! This week we welcome the Bates Family. This lively trio has been heating up the Southern Gospel airwaves with “Jesus On The Mainline.” But this group is about more than just great music; each one has a story to tell that illustrates the abiding love and care of Jesus Christ. Read on and get acquainted with the Bates Family!

imageSGN: Hi, Bates Family! Can you tell us a bit about yourselves?

Tim Bates: The Bates Family has been on the road since July of 1985. We play between 75 to 100 dates a year up and down the eastern seaboard. Since we all still work full time jobs, it’s really hard to do any more than that right now. We have had moderate success in Gospel music as writers and producers with nine radio hits to our credit in the Singing News, SGN Scoops and the Christian Voice. We just really love working in all aspects of ministry. It’s a lot of hard work, but the reward is so gratifying when you see your music touching so many people.

SGN: Please tell us about your latest release to radio. What kind of response have you received from the listeners?

Tim: “Jesus On The Mainline,” is being very well received everywhere we go. People are loving it! I think the reason is really simple. It’s familiar to the listener and it is so much fun to sing. This past weekend in VA we brought the pastor up to sing bass with us. The people just went crazy. Not to mention, it was so fun recording it. We actually brought in a black choir and they killed it! We are thrilled radio is liking it too; that really means so much to us.

SGN: Please introduce us to your group members.

imageBates Family: Our group members is kinda like a melting pot of experiences with having a God Encounter at some point in our lives. We’ll start with Tim.Tim was shot in the chest when he was four years old.The bullet severed an artery in his heart in two, powder burned his lungs and damaged his voice box. The doctors said that if he lived through it, he would never talk above a whisper. Today, Tim is regarded as having one of the strongest voices in the Gospel music field. He has also been blessed with the gift of songwriting, having the opportunity to write with some of America’s most talented writers, and having the privilege of artists recording his material. Tim is also an evangelist, holding conferences, youth camps, along with the Bates’ extensive touring schedule.

I’m LaDonna Bates (Tim’s wife). Back when we were expecting Laykin our daughter, we had received some bad news from the doctors telling us that she would be born with some sort of deformity and may even have a form of Down Syndrome because she was so tiny. They highly encouraged me to abort the pregnancy and start over in time.

Naturally, I cried and Tim and I held on to the promise that God was giving us this baby. No matter how she turned out, God would equip us to handle any situation. They warned us when it was time to have her that she may not cry. Well, she came out wailing and hasn’t stopped crying! We took her for annual check up the first year and the doctor had her file there. He just kept looking at her, then at the file. Several times this went on, then he finally took off his glasses and told us that according to her file she should’ve never made it. But she did and she’s healthy as any little girl could be. He said without a doubt that she is a miracle baby. Today Laykin is seven years old and loves singing at least one song a night.

Heather Meade is the latest vocal addition to the group and her testimony of second chances is so powerful.

Heather say, “I grew up in church and we were there whenever the church doors were open. I remember listening to all of the revival
Preachers and evangelists that would come. I always wished for a testimony like they gave; these big, powerful, life changing testimonies of what God had done for them or others they had encountered. My Mama would always say, ‘Be careful what you ask God, cause you just might get it.’

“I had been married one-and-a-half years when we found out we were expecting our first little boy. We were more than thrilled and loved preparing for his arrival. At right about 36 weeks, I began having some severe issues with the pregnancy. The doctors discovered I had a rare form of toxemia called ‘HELLP Syndrome,’and I would have to stay in the hospital until the baby was born. Now, I had strayed from God a few years before and was not in fellowship with Him as I should have been. Little did I know that He would use this to get me back.

image“It turned out that I would have to be induced immediately and I was not permitted an epidural. After 25 hours of labor, our sweet little boy was born at 9lbs., 15oz., perfectly healthy. However, I was not. I got to spend maybe 20 minutes with him over the next week and a half. After he was born, I began to hemorrhage and it got to the point where they called a chaplain in along with my family. This was after it was determined that I would have to have emergency surgery to try and stop the hemorrhage and the doctors weren’t sure they’d be able to.

“I remember being wheeled down the hall to the OR, no longer being able to see in color (due to blood loss), and it hit me that I was not where I should be with the Lord! That was the most scared I have ever been in my life! I remember having to give my wedding rings to my husband, not knowing if I’d ever see him or my newborn son ever again, and being more scared that if I died I would NOT wake up in Heaven! Why I didn’t repent right then, I don’t know, but He did. Everything is perfect in God’s time and He ordained every step of this journey. His grace allowed me a second chance.

“He woke me up after that surgery, when there was MUCH doubt that I would. He spared me and not long after, my husband and I both walked the aisle. I rededicated and my husband was saved that day.

“You know, being only 21, I figured I had plenty of time to come back to God. He gave me the knowledge that our next BREATH is not guaranteed and not to take time for granted. I’m so thankful that He not only spared me, but gave me the desire of my heart: to sing and minister for Him. Thank GOD for His merciful grace!”

SGN: What are some of your goals as Gospel music artists?

Tim: We would really like to get into some new areas to share our ministry, and also just keep working hard on our craft and try to get better in everything we do. All we have ever wanted is to be an example of what ministry is….LOVING PEOPLE.

SGN: What is some advice you would give to new artists?
Tim: I would say first and foremost make sure it’s a God thing not a you thing. Second, make sure you have the right people around your ministry that have Godly integrity and character to help advance your ministry to different levels. We have had so many people through the years that have helped us that had these qualities; we just wouldn’t be who we are today with out their perspective and influence. Third, please understand that it’s tough being on the road and not everyone is cut out for it. You will give more than you take and the sacrifices will be great at times, but the rewards are out of this world. And last but not least, remember this a ministry; the finances will always follow the anointing. People want to see your sermon, not hear it, and they will give to a ministry that has moved them.
