The Browders: How Sweet The Sound

Written by Staff on May 14, 2015 – 8:58 am -

By Paige Givens

Twenty-five years ago, in the hills of Hiltons, Virginia, a unique and beautiful sound was born. It was a sound full of harmonies so close and sweet that they could only be connected by the blood of family. The sound produced words and songs that are full of hope and new life, words that point others to Jesus Christ. This sound became the music and ministry of The Browders, a family group that is rapidly gaining recognition and admiration in gospel music.

browderspTommy Browder, patriarch and founder of The Browders, grew up singing and writing gospel songs from a very early age. As an adult, he felt God leading him to start a ministry. “He felt the call to minister with his family. He prayed about it and God showed him what to do. We began singing in 1990,” says son Matt. “Actually, it all started in a 1990 Dodge Omni!”

Matt and David Browder were young when they began traveling and ministering with their dad in 1990. Matt recalls, “At the age of 10 or 11, I began singing with Dad. Then, at the age of 13 or 14 I began to learn to sing three part harmony with the group. The Hinsons, Happy Goodmans, The Rambos, The Paynes, and The Crabb Family were huge influences throughout my life.” David notes several influences of his early years, too. “The people that influenced me the most musically were The Original Hinsons, The Happy Goodman Family, Teddy Huffam and The Gems, The Spencers, The Crabb Family, The Paynes, Charles Johnson and The Revivers, Singing Cookes, Elvis, Johnny Cash and Carman.” Just to name a few! David recorded his first song at the young age of eight.

In 2005, Sonya, Matt’s wife, joined the group. Sonya says, “I started piano lessons at age four due to my interest in a piano we were storing at our house for our pastor’s wife. I began singing and playing in church shortly thereafter. I started singing full time with a group based out of my home state of Maine at age 15. We were booked for a concert with the Browders in Tennessee around the year 2000, and our families became friends.   Matt and I married five years later.” Read more »

Browders Earn Third Number One Song With “Listening For The Shout”

Written by Staff on November 7, 2014 – 9:13 am -

The Browders

The Browders

Hiltons, VA (November 5, 2014) Award winning Gospel group, The Browders find themselves with another chart topping song for the month of November on The Singing News monthly chart. This was their third release of a single from their project titled Time Machine. The song that hit at number one is “Listening For The Shout” following their last number one in May of this year titled “Lift Up His Name”.

This is The Browders third number one song from this project following hitting the number one spot five times on their last project The Message. That CD not only earned them five number ones but also achieved seven songs total reaching the top ten. All of the songs were written by the Browders as is their current single.

This year for The Browders has been a one of recognition by their peers as they were nominated for their first Dove Award for Inspirational Song Of The Year. This follows winning “Breakthrough Artist of the Year” at the Absolutely Gospel Music Awards in 2013, the Browders continue to earn that title and they continue to get the attention of the Gospel music world.

“We can never thank God enough for all the blessings He has given to our family. We continue to be amazed that He has chosen us to travel this country that we love and touch so many lives with His message through song.” stated Matthew Browder.

About The Browders
From their beginning traveling together as a family in a Dodge Omni car, to a successful music ministry with national hits, The Browders of Hiltons, Virginia are one of the most exciting groups to step on stage in many years. This family group consists of Tommy Browder, his sons, Matthew and David, and Matthew’s wife, Sonya. They travel year round, keeping a full concert schedule as well as holding revivals across the country. One of their most captivating qualities is that The Browders play much of their music live with Tommy on acoustic lead, David on bass, Matthew on rhythm guitar and Sonya on piano. They also write most of their own music.

In recent years, they have been steadily expanding and improving their ministry for the glory of God. The were voted “Breakthrough Artist of the Year” in the prestigious 2013 AGM Awards. They have enjoyed Singing News #1 song charting success with original songs like “Praise You In This Valley,” “Message Of The Cross,” and “Land Of No Goodbyes.” . With the release of their highly-anticipated, “The Message” recording came a milestone—their first #1 radio singles. They are currently performing songs from that recording as well as their hits and most-requested songs. Their current new release ‘Time Machine’ already has a number one song on the AGM Charts in “He’s Alive”.

Though things change throughout the years, their mission has remained the same—to bring hope to a lost and dying world and to encourage and challenge believers. They’re real and they’re anointed. We hope that in the near future you are able to attend or host a Browders’ concert to experience how God is working through this team.

Fast Five with Matthew Browder

Written by Staff on August 25, 2014 – 4:22 pm -

Matthew Browder

Matthew Browder

At SGN Scoops we enjoy getting to know the artists just a little more, and we know our readers like to read about things they might hear from the stage. We have started a series called “Fast Five” where we will ask various artists their top five responses to various questions.

For this Fast Five, we went to The Browders who are quickly becoming a household name for those who love family harmony. This family from Hiltons, Virginia, has been singing for almost 25 years. In 2013, they celebrated three number-one hits on the Singing News Charts. They have earned two number-one hits with their current album, Time Machine. Last week they learned that they have earned their first Dove Award nomination for “Lift Up His Name” which was written by Matthew Browder.

We asked Matthew Browder to name five things he enjoys doing on his days off.

Matthew’s answers:

The Browders

The Browders

1. Writing songs – Matthew writes many songs which the Browders have recorded, several of which are included on Time Machine

2. Putt- putt – This apparently helps improve Matthew’s golf scores!

3. Golf – An integral part of every well-rounded Gospel artist.

4. Spend time with family – Even though Matthew travels with his family, he still enjoys being with them on his off-hours. “We are very family-oriented and I love being around family. It’s fun to get to travel and share ideas.”  [From a 2013 interview with SGN Scoops.]

5. Spend time with friends – The Browders are well known and well-loved amongst their peers. Donna King of Vertical Sky says, “The best thing about the Browders is that they are true friends and their very first goal, all day, every day in ministry, is to win souls for Jesus. I love them all and I am honored to work with them!”[From a 2013 interview with SGN Scoops.]

Special thanks to Matthew Browder for sending SGN Scoops his Fast Five answers.
