Amber Nelon Thompson faces a variety of lessons in life and film

Feature by Craig Harris

Amber Nelon Thompson is becoming comfortable in front of the camera. The Nelons’ soprano is making her big-screen debut in A Question of Faith, which is slated for a release this fall.

“I play Michelle Danielson,” Thompson says. “It’s about three different families who go through some very, very trying times. One family is struggling with losing a loved one. Another family is living with a loved one who makes a mistake, and they don’t know how to help. Another family is struggling with the possibility of losing a loved one. All three families are kind of woven together in the end.”

The faith-based film was the first that she had even auditioned for, and the cast includes C. Thomas Howell (The Outsiders), Renee O’Conner (Xena: Warrior Princess), Kim Fields (Facts of Life), C.T. Stallings (War Room), Richard T. Jones (The Wood) and Christian recording artist Jaci Velasquez.

The Nelons and Jeff Stice appear in Hamilton, Ontario on New Year’s Eve

The Nelons at Hamilton ON on NYE '16

New Year’s Eve at Bethel Gospel Tabernacle in Hamilton, Ontario, has become known as a must-see evening of music. Every year a different artist is presented by the church and the audience responds, filling the auditorium with applause and appreciation. December 31, 2016, was no different. The Nelons and Jeff Stice took the stage amid the Christmas trees and spotlights, sharing their faith and talent with a crowd of 700.

Kelly Nelon Clark and her husband Jason, daughters Amber and Autumn, along with pianist Jeff Stice gave the audience a full evening of current songs, hymns and Christmas favorites. They began with tunes from their latest albums Stronger Together and Family Harmony. Songs featuring each

member were interspersed with specials by the award-winning Jeff Stice. The audience joined in on familiar Christmas and Gospel songs, encouraged by emcee Jason Clark. A special, nostalgic moment occurred when the auditorium grew dark and the spotlight shone down on Kelly performing “A Christmas In December.”

Rex Nelon, Kelly’s father, formed the Rex Nelon Singers in 1977, formerly the LeFevres. Kelly was singing alto for the group at that time, and now – forty years later – she is still standing strong as the matriarch of the Nelons. Kelly remains sweet, approachable and caring, even taking time from the group’s repertoire to sing “Happy Birthday” to my father who was turning 91 years old. Thanks Kelly!

As a Nelons fan since the late ‘80’s when the group included Karen Peck and Jerry Thompson and frequently visited southern Ontario and northern New York State, I was excited to hear this group on their own where they might showcase each individuals’ skill. Kelly’s voice remains as true and soft as it did decades ago, owing in part to her regular vocal exercises. Amber is one of, if not ‘the’, preeminent vocalists of her generation in Christian music. With a clear, expressive tone retaining the bluegrass background of her dad, Autumn charmed the crowd on one of her few solo songs. Jason Clark was disarming with his down-to-earth delivery belying his ability to sing several octaves. I can’t wait to hear the music this family produces in the future as they continue to develop their own sound.

It was great to see Jeff Stice again, since he had last appeared at Bethel Gospel Tabernacle in December 2013 with Triumphant. Those fingers can certainly burn up the keyboard! Whether accompanying the Nelons or doing a solo feature, Jeff showed the crowd that he deserves every award and nomination he has earned.

The Nelons completed the evening with Amber singing “Auld Lang Syne,” along with the audience, while Nelons’ members captured the closing event on Facebook Live. The ballad turned into a barn-burner with “I’ll Fly Away.” The Nelon ladies certainly let it fly in this last song as Jason led the audience. You can find it on The Nelons page here

I’m sure all the attendees would join my family and I in saying that this was a

The True Spirit of Thanksgiving, Prayers for Jason Clark and Family…..

Written by scoopsnews on November 24, 2016 – 5:23 pm -

img_4163Many of us gathered around the table with our families today and ate Turkey and Dressing and lots of delicious food. As I looked at Facebook tonight, I saw two posts made by our friend Jason Clark.

The first one about 4 hours ago:

Just got off the phone with my dad.
My mom is in critical condition with a heart attack and 100% blockage to her main artery. They will perform open heart surgery with the hopes of 4-bypasses. They got her to the hospital very fast and believe they were timely enough that prevented major damage from the heart attack.

My mom has many Alzheimer’s patients that she cares for 24/7 and was just about to serve them and their families Thanksgiving Dinner at the time of her Heart Attack.

Thank you for your continued prayers!

The second one, about an hour ago:

So many friends have come to our side to offer their assistance and many more from literally all around the world have sent messages letting us know they are praying.

A friend and an employee of American Airlines, got me on a plane from Orlando to Miami (just landed) and now on my way to be in Louisville by tonight!

Michael English was on vacation with his family this weekend and has offered to fill in for me singing (pretty good fill-in👍). His manager Kevin, is going to road manage and look out for the girls as well.

I was also gonna be the bus-driver this weekend, and I’ve already had several offers there.

I feel so blessed and I’m reminded what a powerful, unstoppable force friendship is. Love can accomplish literally anything.

Nothing stronger than a mother’s love and I’m blessed so many of you have stepped up so I could be with mine during this time.

This is the True Spirit of Thanksgiving.  We are all praying for your You and Your Mom Jason!

Thank you for sharing……

Two New Projects Available Today From Award-Winning Group, The Nelons

Written by Staff on August 12, 2016 – 8:26 pm -

cd41873 nlfhHendersonville, TN (August 12th, 2016)4t – Daywind recording artists, The Nelons, are excited to announce the release of Stronger Together and Family Harmony, both available today!

After nearly two years of writing, song-selection and recording, the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame members were faced with the challenge of selecting which of the eighteen recorded songs would make it onto their newest album.  The Nelons felt strongly that each song held an incredible potential to minister to and encourage listeners, so instead of narrowing down the selection, the idea of jointly releasing Stronger Together and Family Harmony was born. With a long list of world-class songwriters gracing the credits, it’s not difficult to see why eliminating songs from the track listing would be near impossible.  An accomplished songwriter in his own right, Jason Clark was honored to co-write with such legendary writers as Dony and Reba (Rambo) McGuire, and Dawn Thomas, in addition to the contributions Songwriters of the Century, Bill and Gloria Gaither, made to the project. Paired with the incomparable orchestrations and musicianship of hall of famers such as Brent Mason, Gordon Mote and David Huntsinger, among others, Stronger Together and Family Harmony are both exceptional projects that the Nelons are eager to present to their long-time fans, and new listeners alike.

Two very special guests, Bill Gaither and Karen Peck Gooch, joined the Nelons in the studio to offer their talents to these collections of songs.  Karen and Kelly Nelon Clark reminisce on their time singing together with Kelly’s father, Rex Nelon, with a sentimental song entitled ‘You Can’t Make Old Friends’ while Bill Gaither joins the family-group on ‘Suppertime.’ The Nelons also put their special touch on a few familiar classics such as ‘We Shall Behold Him,’ ‘I Think I’ll Read It Again,’ and ‘Then Came The Morning.’

The first single from the pair of projects, ‘I Just Can’t Make It By Myself’ is featured on Family Harmony. The song climbed the Singing News Radio Charts earlier this Spring, and has been a crowd favorite with audiences across the country.  The current radio single, ‘My Father’s House,’ from Stronger Together, was released to radio in July and its smooth tones and tight harmony are already resonating with listeners.

Family Harmony and Stronger Together are available at Christian retail stores across the country and digitally at iTunes and other online outlets.  Bulk purchasing for gift and ministry purposes is available by calling 1.800.635.9581.

Daywind Records is home to an award-winning roster of artists, including Legacy Five, Adam Crabb, Browders, Jim Brady Trio, Greater Vision, Joseph Habedank, The Hoppers, Karen Peck & New River, Bowling Family, Tribute, Nelons, Brian Free & Assurance, Blackwood Brothers Quartet, the Second-Half Quartet and Wilburn & Wilburn.  Daywind is distributed to retail through New Day Christian Distributors, Sony RED, and all major digital outlets, including iTunes.

Gospel Music Hall Of Fame Inducts Jeff Stice With The Nelons

Nashville, Tennessee (May 24, 2016) On May 13th Jeff Stice, musician extraordinaire, graduated from Louisiana Baptist University with a degree for Bachelor of Arts in Music. While most people take the transitions in life without taking advantage of the situation, but Jeff took his situation to advance his his education.
Jeff stated, “When I began my solo career I decided to go back to school and get my degree! Well nearly two years later I got it! I graduated from Louisiana Baptist University with my Bachelor of Arts degree!! I’m going to continue to get my Masters too.”
For more information about Louisiana Baptist University located in Shreveport Louisiana go to: http://www.lbu.edu/.
Jeff also had the honor recently of being inducted into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame for his years of traveling and playing with The Nelons.
Jeff was excited to say, “This family will never know the impact they’ve made in my life. Rex Nelon gave me a chance, and Kelly and Jason continue to do that. Todd Nelon allows me to come and share my music at his church. They are like my second family…I’ll be 56 in a couple of weeks and as I look back over my life, Gospel Music has pretty much been its focus. I’ve been blessed to see a lot of places and I’ve gotten to experience many things. Accolades and achievements that if I’m honest, made me feel good….at the time. There have also been times, that if I’m honest, I was too focused on Gospel Music . We all set goals because it feels good and motivates us when we reach them. With me, there were times that my goals became my identity. That happened because I spent more time with my goal than I did with my Heavenly Father.”

Continuing Stice commented, “When I should have been the happiest guy in the world I was miserable and my life was falling apart . Why God never gave up on me is beyond my ability to reason or figure out. Sometimes I feel like we think we know what God thinks and how He should react to things. Have I got it all figured out? Hardly! I’m just trying to finish well. I do not take things for granted. And I know what Phillipians 3:13-14 means ( look it up! It’s inspiring!) THE GOSPEL MUSIC HALL OF FAME…..Thank you Nelons, Mom and Dad and my friends. I love you so much. All I can say is wow!”

Kelly Nelon Clark: A Ray of Hope

Written by Staff on May 22, 2016 – 8:06 am -

Kelly Nelon Clark

Kelly Nelon Clark

I spoke to a friend a few days ago and she was asking me to pray for her. She has gone through some tough times and was feeling pretty hopeless, wanting to just give up on life. She was prepared to end it all. With God’s help I was able to open her eyes to life and let her know she was important to Him. I tried to put into words how she felt as it might be an encouragement to others who may be feeling the very same way.

There are days when I have no words for how I’m feeling. I would love to say I’m always up and positive but it wouldn’t be true.

Some days the sun shines and the skies are blue and everything with the world is right. Days when I feel like it could not get any better than it is right now; days when the birds are singing a brand new song just for me. God is everywhere and in everything I see. I can almost smell the beautiful fragrance of His love. His arms surround me and make me feel like I can take on the world. I feel safe and secure knowing He’s here.

Then there are days when the darkness closes in and there is nothing to be seen anywhere. This orphan feels alone, hopeless, and defeated. The tunnel with the light at the end has turned into a black hole with no way out. I call You but You don’t answer. I cry but You don’t see my tears. I wonder what have I done to make You not love me? Where have You gone? I stumble in the darkness to find my way. I fall and keep trying to pick myself up, but how many times can I do that without total collapse?

Just at the breaking point, just when I’m going to give up, there is a break in the cloud of darkness. A ray of hope shines through into my eyes. It’s what I needed to see, it’s what I needed to know. You are still there!

You never really left. It was me who closed my eyes to the light. I let the darkness overtake me. I should have known, I should have remembered that the evil one comes to steal, kill and destroy. Thank You for not giving up on me when I gave up on myself. Thank You for loving me when no one else loved me. Thank You for whispering my name and letting me know I’m not an orphan and I’m not alone.

Lord, I am Your child; keep me near to You.

Kelly Nelon Clark begins filming first lead role

Written by Staff on May 13, 2016 – 2:01 pm -

Kelly Nelon

Kelly Nelon Clark

Kelly Nelon Clark has been acting for some time, as reported by SGN Scoops in the August 2014 edition of SGNScoops magazine, when Clark joined the faith-based film The Dancer. She told us in that issue, “I have always loved theater and film. If you look back to around 1980 you can see where I mentioned that it was a secret dream of mine. I have to give credit to a friend in Dallas, Georgia, who invited me to acting classes, Elizabeth Hale. I went with her the first time and I loved it! We all sat around with different scripts and each had our turn. It sounded really good in my head but when it came out the first time I felt heat come to my face. I didn’t quit; I just kept going back every week for that four-hour class. I’m still learning, but I’m loving it.”

Clark told her followers on Facebook today that she starts filming her first lead role on Monday. Author, publisher, screenwriter, actor, and producer of hardcore Christian books and Christian films, Donald James Parker says here, “I have cast her for the lead role in my next film, Old Rugged

Cross, which will be shot in mid May of 2016. I truly think that Kelly can make the crossover very successfully and her fan base will be able to enjoy her talents in both areas for many years to come. I am confident Kelly will become a prominent player in the Indie Christian film arena. Who knows? Perhaps Hollywood will come calling someday with a faith based film that will allow Kelly to take a bigger stage. No one deserves it more.”

“Would you pray for me?” asks Clark. “Without sounding pretentious I start filming a movie, The Old Rugged Cross on Monday with Donald James Parker, Ken Dohse, Juli Tapken and more and these guys are professional and great at what they do. This is my first lead role with lots of dialogue. I’m new at this but I’m excited and ready for this journey. Pray that God will help me in every way to fulfill this role. My plate has been rather full lately but God won’t put you anywhere that He won’t provide what you need. Thank you to Jeff Rose who has coached me and encouraged me. You will never know how much I appreciate it. Thank you to Autumn Nelon Clark for going over my lines with me. I hope I make all of you proud!”
