The Chuck Wagon Gang's latest album

The Chuck Wagon Gang sing Carter Family songs

Arden, North Carolina (September 10, 2019) — The Chuck Wagon Gang (website HERE) has claimed the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart with their latest album, “No Depression In Heaven, The Gospel Songs Of The Carter Family.” The release from Mountain Home Music Company has also reached No. 2 on Billboard’s Southern Gospel chart, No. 19 on the Top Christian / Gospel chart and No.31on the Current Country albums chart.
“The Chuck Wagon Gang‘s tribute album to the Gospel songs of the Carter Family is a project almost a year in the making. We worked exceptionally hard on this project. From the choosing of the songs to the arrangements to long hours in the studio….artists always hope that this hard work will render reward. And for us it certainly has!” says alto singer Shaye Smith. “The Chuck Wagon Gang has not had a number one record since probably the 1960s. We are so excited to be part of a project with such far reaching attributes — and anxiously await what lies ahead!!”

Since 1936, hope, harmony, faith and family have been at the center of the Chuck Wagon Gang’s music. Today in its third generation, the group decided to honor The Carter Family’s storied career, carrying on the American roots tradition of singing songs from the heart and telling stories of life’s struggles and what people turn to to get through them. With empathy, this music recognizes the human condition.

Smith says they carefully selected songs from The Carter Family’s catalog that would fit with the Chuck Wagon Gang’s well-known style of four-part harmony vocals and their signature guitar accompaniment. By doing so, they added yet another dimension of tribute to the Carter Family that’s sure to please connoisseurs of the legendary group’s history, who will easily hear echoes of the second generation Carter Family sound, created by Mother Maybelle with daughters Helen, Anita and June, and at one time even incorporated the guitar of Chet Atkins. The result is an even richer tribute to the Carter Family’s entire generation-spanning legacy.

“One of the Chuck Wagon Gang’s most beloved songs is ‘Echoes From The Burning Bush.’ That is what this album sounds like to me — an Old Testament echo,” says Marty Stuart, Grammy-award winning American country singer. “The songs and the singing are crystal clear. Beautiful words wrapped in sounds that touch my heart, give me hope, fill my soul with peace, and paint pictures in my mind of God’s eternal Heaven.”

Chuck Wagon GangAbout the Chuck Wagon Gang

Although the Chuck Wagon Gang has been around since 1936 — undergoing many personnel changes over the years — its sound and devotion to old-fashioned gospel has remained much the same. Their greatest significance is that the band provides an important link between country music and traditional sacred songs of the South. This music, has moved Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Charlie Daniels, and generations of gospel singers and open-eared listeners. For more than 80 years, the Chuck Wagon Gang has offered hope and harmony, faith and family. Now in its third generation, the Chuck Wagon Gang features alto singer Shaye Smith, tenor singer Stan Hill, soprano singer Melissa Kemper and guitarist and bass singer Karl Smakula.

Arden, North Carolina — Since 1936, hope, harmony, faith and family have been at the center of the Chuck Wagon Gang’s music. Today in its third generation, the group continues to uphold the historic legacy, with four-part harmony vocals and their signature guitar accompaniment.

Now, the Chuck Wagon Gang is furthering its history by signing with Sonlite Records. The group is working in the studio on their new album, produced by Jeff Collins and David Johnson, which is a tribute to The Carter Family’s storied career.

“When we started thinking about this project of honoring The Carter Family’s gospel music, we wanted it to be special, and we wanted it to be done right,” says Shaye Smith, the group’s alto singer and direct descendent of the original Chuck Wagon Gang members. “Crossroads was the first name that came to mind.”

Smith says they carefully selected songs from The Carter Family’s catalog that would fit with the Chuck Wagon Gang’s well-known style. Everyone in the group is excited about the album’s potential as they begin to record in the studio and happy to join Sonlite’s roster of artists.

“We are really excited because so many of the label mates are our good friends, so there’s just a huge unity that stretches throughout all of the groups,” says Smith.

Crossroads executive and founder of Sonlite Records, Chris White, adds, “Before I knew much about what music even was, I knew there was a Chuck Wagon Gang. My dad played the Gang all the time when I was a child. So, after all these years, it’s an honor to be part of carrying on this legendary tradition of music. We intend to preserve this 80-plus year classic sound, with the reverence it deserves!”

Be on the lookout for new music from the Chuck Wagon Gang during the summer of 2019.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING WITH  WLOSGMH CONVENTION MARCH 2018

Written by Staff on March 5, 2018 – 9:09 am -

Jordan's Bridge at WLOSGMH CONVENTION MARCH 2018

Jordan’s Bridge at WLOSGMH CONVENTION MARCH 2018

A couple of weeks ago, I was in concert at a local Carolina gospel music venue. The restaurant features some great food and gospel music. Of course my mind went back to the Hallelujah Supper Club and what we did back in the day.

The concert was filled with lots of singing, laughing and plenty of fellowship. Afterwards a young man no more than 18 or 19, came up asking some questions about gospel music and the Singing Americans.
Of course we talked for a long time. Somehow we got to talking about radio and how gospel music has changed into today’s current delivery. Of course we all have our opinions on what we like and how stuff today is different than it was back in the day.
The young man’s conversation was more than just a passing interest. He is a true southern gospel music junkie. He began to tell me about his records that Granny had given him, even those he had bought. He shared how he had learned of the Statesmen, Stamps and Blackwood Brothers. He listed his own “All Star” quartet with JD Sumner, Jack Toney, Bill Shaw, Doy Ott and Jack Clark on piano.

Well, all of a sudden, I found out this gospel music enthusiast really was a diehard fan. That is some All Star Quartet he would put together. As our conversation ended I told him I would look forward to more talks about gospel music.  I also told him about the WLOSGMH Convention and thought he would love the history, stories, videos and vendors.

The WLOSGMH Convention provides a place for gospel music fans, collectors and historians to gather sharing the oral history of the people’s spiritual music, southern gospel. The stories handed down to those in attendance are truly the basis of continuing our music heritage.
Southern gospel music historians John Crenshaw, Harold Timmons, Hannah Kennedy and Ann Downing have assembled a Facebook presence of over forty thousand members in a group dedicated to nothing but southern gospel music and its heritage.
Stories, group photos, concert posters, videos, audio clips and collectible tid-bits are shared from the historians and moderators. Group members proudly show their memorabilia and music collections. And it is commons to see photos of purchased record finds from garage/ estate sales, the local thrift store or eBay.
Stories on the history of artists, quartets, concert happenings from back when, bus stories and such are fresh every day on the FB group-WE LOVE OUR SOUTHERN GOSPEL MUSIC HISTORY.
Under toolage of John Crenshaw, the group boasts video and audio clips that are not found in many collectors treasures. John says, “This is fun to share what makes our music so special. The videos are treasures rarely seen in recent years and unique to our FB group page. The history and stories we share give a perspective to gospel music, the singers and their legacy.”
Harold Timmons and Ann Downing provide a performers view of the history and are detailed with facts and stories of the Speers, Downings, Chuck Wagon Gang, Hemphills, Barnetts and Sheltons.  While Hannah Kennedy is devout in finding those classic video/ audio clips, photos and tid bits of information of artists that left an unsung mark in gospel music.
Other gospel music enthusiasts, collectors and artists share their stories, memorabilia, photos and collectibles with the growing FB gospel group. From far and wide people are sharing that special connection in gospel music with others.

What a wondrous announcement the angels made to the shepherds so many years ago, giving all of us the reason to rejoice and celebrate a precious birth! Chuck Wagon Gang celebrates history of Gospel music

Written by Staff on October 7, 2015 – 10:17 am -

Chuck Wagon Gang c.1950

Chuck Wagon Gang c.1950

Long before a lot of us were born, The Chuck Wagon Gang was formed. In 1935 Dad Carter and his son Jim along with daughters Rose and Anna began singing. They got their break in 1936. Their first radio break was sponsor singers for Bewley Flour.  They recorded on Columbia Records for 39 years. They were the first group to record the popular song “I’ll Fly Away.” [Editor’s Note: The late Ruth Ellen Carter Yates who recently passed away, filled in for Anna in the 1950’s and began travelling consistently with the Chuck Wagon Gang in the late 1970’s.]

The Chuck Wagon Gang still carries on the tradition today with Anna’s granddaughter Shaye Smith singing alto, and who is also manager and owner of the group.  She is accompanied with Melissa Kemper who sings soprano, Stan Hill on the tenor part and Jeremy Stephens on bass.
CHUCK WAGON GANG 2015

CHUCK WAGON GANG 2015

They still sing the old songs in the original manner, with Jeremy playing the only instrument guitar, and on occasion he picks up his banjo.  They add a few new songs into the concert.  Often they take audience requests for songs, dragging out the old Chuck Wagon Song Books.  Think about your favorite song they sang so you can request it at their next concert.

The Gang has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl and the Grand Ole’ Opry.  Most recently they released an album with songs by Marty Stuart and they have sung on numerous occasions on his TV show.
It is a golden opportunity for us to be able to present The Chuck Wagon Gang to you on November 21 at Shiloh Hills Baptist Church, 75 Hawkins Store Rd., Kennesaw, GA. The concert will be at 2:00 pm in the afternoon.  This way you won’t have to drive in the dark.  It will be a great opportunity for you to get a group together for the concert.  You could plan lunch before the concert or dinner after the concert. There are several good eating places within a short distance from the Church.
A special discount is offered for groups of 12 or more and to seniors over 65, tickets are $12.00 in advance.  If you don’t fit there, tickets are $15.00 advance.  If you wait until concert date the tickets will be $20.00 at the door.

Ruth Ellen Carter Yates of the Chuck Wagon Gang passes

Written by Staff on October 7, 2015 – 7:54 am -

12086828_10206517560432355_1979649693_nSGN Scoops is sorry to hear of the passing of Ruth Ellen Carter Yates on October 5, 2015.  Harold Timmons reported this on his facebook page:

FUNERAL SERVICE FOR RUTH ELLEN CARTER YATES OF THE CHUCK WAGON GANG

Funeral service for Ruth Ellen Yates will be Saturday, October 10th at 11:30am. It will be at Mount Olivet Funeral Home, 2301 N Sylvinia Ave., Ft. Worth, Tx. 76111.

The family is asking that in lieu of flowers donations can be made to Cooks Children’s Hospital in Ft. Worth to the Music Dept.

12083710_10206451729109689_1073825924_nRuth Ellen, 91, passed away on October 5th. Back in the early radio days, Ruth Ellen often sang with the Gang on soprano or alto. This was long before The Gang began touring in the early fifties.

Ruth Ellen sang on the first concerts for Wally Fowler, as Anna had just had a son, Greg Gordon. In the late ’70’s Ruth Ellen began recording and touring with the Gang through 1989. She came back in 1994, touring, and recording again.

She was a wonderful singer, and the fans loved her. She loved her fans as well, and loved her work with the CWG. Please keep the family in your prayers.

Julie Hudson of Chuck Wagon Gang says Farewell

Written by Staff on July 10, 2015 – 3:37 pm -

Chuckwagon Gang

Chuckwagon Gang

Dear Friends and Fans of the Chuck Wagon Gang,

After much prayerful consideration, it is with mixed emotions that I must announce that the time has come for me to leave my position with the Chuck Wagon Gang. I have dearly loved singing for the last 9 ½ years and have loved and appreciated each of you so very much. It has been your love and support that have allowed me to do what I have done thus far and for that I am very grateful. I have made some of the most wonderful friends and have worked with some of the most awesome folks ever over the years. I will miss all of you so very much. God has been so very good to me, but I feel He is now leading me away from the “Gang.” I don’t have any plans as of yet, and I am unsure of what the future holds, but I am leaving it in God’s hands. Hopefully, if God allows, I will see you down the road again. I just want to do whatever it is that He would have me to do. I would ask that you keep me and my family in your prayers as I make this transition. Thanks again for all your love and support- it will never be forgotten. I love and appreciate each of you!

God Bless you,

Julie Hudson
