Karen Peck and New River: Sailing down a new stream

Written by Staff on November 18, 2015 – 2:24 pm -

Karen Peck and New River

Karen Peck and New River

Twenty-four years ago, a dream was realized. In 1991, Rickey and Karen Peck Gooch, along with Karen’s sister Susan Peck Jackson, formed the musical ministry known as Karen Peck and New River. Little did they know that this ministry would literally take them all over the world. Since that time, New River has been awarded three Gospel Music Association Dove Awards and three Grammy Award nominations. Karen has been named the Singing News Fan Awards Favorite Soprano an unprecedented eleven times. Despite their numerous accolades, one single thing stands above all else. Their ministry is centered on proclaiming the name of Jesus Christ through song. Through all of their joys and sorrows, they have remained true to their calling and follow the footsteps of Jesus every step of the way.

Long before New River became a reality, a little girl named Karen was too small to be seen while singing about her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Karen says, “They used to stand me in a chair when I was three years old. Mama used to sing in church and my first time I remember singing, I sang ‘I’m Bound for That City.’”

Karen and Susan’s first recollection of Southern Gospel music was attending the All-Night Gospel Sing in Atlanta. Karen states, “I remember my Mom and Dad used to take me and my sisters to the All-Night Gospel Sing in Atlanta. Literally, they would be all night and we’d be in the Municipal Auditorium in Atlanta, Georgia, and they would last until six o’clock in the morning. I remember being mesmerized when Vestal Goodman came out on the stage.” Susan echoes Karen’s comments by adding, “I would get so excited when the Goodmans would walk out on stage and start singing. Vestal would step up to sing and her voice would fill the building. She was my favorite!”

Rickey Gooch says his first memory of Southern Gospel music was when his mom had a group come to their house to practice when he was a very small boy. Ricky Braddy shares that he’s always wanted to sing Gospel music, even as a child. He says, “I was four years old when I first blurted out the alto part to a song my sister was singing. She and I sang ‘When I Need Someone to Talk To’ in our little old church. I’ve done a lot of types of music, but nothing satisfies like singing about Jesus.”

SGN Scoops Wacky Wednesday: Top Ten Artist Favorite Pizza Toppings

Written by Staff on July 22, 2015 – 8:21 am -

wackywednesdayThanks for joining us for another Wacky Wednesday on SGN Scoops. Today we ask another insightful question, “What do Gospel artists like to put on their pizza?” (because we know YOU are dying to know that answer!)

Karen Peck and New River

Karen Peck and New River

SGN Scoops polled a few artists about various things and tabulated their answers. We have used this (not so great) scientific process to create today’s Wacky Wednesday Top Ten!

The number one answer for favorite toppings was, of course, pepperoni. Who gave us this answer? Chris Jenkins, Karen Peck (who cheated and also asked for pineapple! But that’s okay because we all love Karen and she can say whatever she wants!) Joseph Habedank, Michaela Brown (yes, this kitchen chef actually eats pizza!) Billy Blackwood, and Gary Casto.

Gary Casto and Tribute

Gary Casto and Tribute

Donna King and Lauren Talley only wanted cheese!

David Sutton and Greg Bentley voted for sausage.

Two out of three Booth Brothers** asked for extra tomato sauce. The other one suggested green peppers.

Phil Collingsworth Sr. likes it Hawaiian style, and asked for pineapple.

Clayton Inman, Scotty Inman and Triumphant

Clayton Inman, Scotty Inman and Triumphant

Scott Inman also cheated, and instead of suggesting just one topping, he nominated “Meat Lovers” for his favorite. But again, we all love Scotty, so we let him get away with this response.

Speaking of Inmans, Scotty’s dad Clayton had only one word in response to what his favorite pizza topping was: “YES!”

Shannon Smith thinks along the same line as Clayton when he says, “Everything except anchovies!”

Booth Brothers

Booth Brothers

Hannah Webb stole this writer’s answer when she responded, “Barbeque Chicken!”

We are sure you have come away from this feature feeling more educated about the pizza toppings enjoyed by Southern Gospel artists. Or perhaps…just hungry for pizza. If so, we have accomplished our goal.

Stay tuned for more of these indepth polls right here on SGN Scoops!

SGN Scoops Wacky Wednesday: Top Ten Places Gospel Artists Like To Eat

Written by Staff on June 24, 2015 – 4:37 pm -

wackywednesdayThanks for joining us for another Wacky Wednesday on SGN Scoops. Today we ask another insightful question: “Where do Gospel artists like to eat?”

Booth Brothers

Booth Brothers

SGN Scoops polled about 17 or so artists about various things and tabulated their answers. We have used this (not so great) scientific process to create today’s Wacky Wednesday Top Ten (more or less)!

Zane and Donna King

Zane and Donna King

Our panel of expert artists gave us the following answers.

The Number One answer it seems is, of course, Cracker Barrel. Now we aren’t sure if there is a particular entrée that is preferred by our contestants, although most of us on Facebook are aware that Gerald Wolfe likes Cracker Barrel for the lima beans. He was not one of our panel of guests, but five out of 17 on the panel voted for this country-style restaurant, including Greg Bentley, all three of the Booth Brothers and Donna King.

The next favorite place to eat is in a mall

Greg Bentley

food court, as voted on by Scotty Inman and David Sutton. David also indicated that he enjoys Bourbon Chicken in the mall.

Other favorite restaurants include…

Michaela Brown…Skyline Chili

Karen Peck… Longhorn Steakhouse

Hannah Webb… Panera

Lauren Talley Alvey…Cheesecake Factory

Gary Casto… Waffle House

Billy Blackwood… HuHot

Phil Collingsworth Sr. … Dickey’s Barbeque

Three Bridges

Some other interesting responses include…

Clayton Inman, who likes to eat on the bus.

Joseph Habedank, who likes to investigate local restaurants.

Shannon Smith, who said, “Five Guys may be the most common and consistent, particularly when we’re on a tight

schedule (however, some of the local places are very cool and interesting.)”

So now you know! There may be more than 10 answers, but that is how we roll on the SGN Scoops Wacky Wednesday!

Lauren Talley Alvey: “Honestly, after traveling all the time, when I have some time off, I love to just stay home. If we’re going somewhere, we like Las Vegas a lot for the shopping and shows. (We take Jesus to Sin City.)” (The Talleys)

SGN Scoops Wacky Wednesday: What Can An SG Newbie Expect At A Concert?

Written by Staff on May 20, 2015 – 8:10 am -

wackywednesdayWelcome to another edition of Wacky Wednesday. SGN Scoops has polled about 18 artists about various things and received their answers. We have used this (not so much) scientific process to tabulate the Wacky Wednesday Top Ten (more or less)!

Today our subject is: What can someone new to Southern Gospel expect at a concert?

SGN Scoops Wacky Wednesday Top Ten

SGN Scoops Wacky Wednesday Top Ten

Our panel of expert artists gave us the following answers. These are not in any particular order. Do you agree/disagree?

Our first set of artists all gave very positive responses….

Billy Blackwood…It’s supposed to be fun!

Michaela Brown…You’ll leave feeling good!

Karen Peck…It’s very uplifting

Gary Casto

Gary Casto

Gary Casto…Best music in the world

David Sutton…You will be blessed

Greg Bentley…It’s life changing!

Booth Brothers1*…Be ready to clap your hands and have a good time!

Booth Brothers 3*…You’ll have a hand-clapping, foot-stomping time!

And then there were very specific comments…

Joseph Habedank…Christian artists are much more accessible than secular artists.

Booth Brothers

Booth Brothers

Lauren Talley Alvey…Our genre offers something for everyone, regardless of age or background. Most artists I know really care about people and ministry, and we aim to deliver a message each time we step on stage.

Phil Collingsworth Sr. …Our songwriters are highly esteemed

Don’t worry about the concerts being Age Appropriate…

Shannon Smith…The genre is VERY diverse and you’ll like it a lot more than you think you will (especially if you’re young and have been biased against the genre). Give it a chance – there’s a lot to love!

The Browns

The Browns

Chris Jenkins…Yes, individuals under 40 love Southern Gospel too!

Donna King…It’s NOT old people music. It’s for EVERYBODY!

Have you heard these comments before?

Booth Brothers2*…Someone will think it’s too loud

Clayton Inman…Could get a little loud

Rick Webb Family

Rick Webb Family

I hope you go to concerts to hear the singing because…

Scott Inman…There will a lot of singing

Hannah Webb…Be prepared for at least five encores by the end of the concert 🙂

From Karen Peck Special Prayer For Rickey

Written by SGN Scoops Staff on April 13, 2015 – 2:41 pm -

Rickey

Rickey

Hey Friends,

This week is Rickey’s the final week of treatments! Four radiations and one chemo left.

I am writing to you for a special reason. Over the past six weeks, Rickey has worked very hard to swallow and eat. Since the cancer is located in the left tonsil and surrounding lymph nodes, the radiation has literally burned his throat to the point of almost unbearable pain. He literally has no taste buds or saliva. On top of this, the chemo has made him very weak and nauseated. He has been taking medicines for these symptoms but now they are not working as well. He has lost weight and is very weak.

Today is a hard day. This will be a hard week. While I was waiting on Rickey to get his radiation treatment, I began to pray and ask the Lord to strengthen him and to build his immune system especially this week. Will y’all stand with me in prayer believing? Will you pray bold prayers for Rickey? In all of my years of traveling and having had the wonderful opportunity of knowing so many of you, I have never been so eager to reach out and request something so heartfelt. My heart is breaking for my husband and I knew I could count on you to stand with me in prayer for his healing and to pray him through this last stretch. I know God is willing and able!! We have been so overwhelmed by your continued prayers, love, and support. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We love you dearly.

A Note From Karen Peck

Written by Staff on April 2, 2015 – 11:49 am -

Karen-Peck-and-New-River-2015-5

A Note From Karen 🙂

Hey Friends!

So many of you have been asking about Rickey. Thank you all for the prayers. We can definitely feel the strength and peace from the Lord. Honestly, we could not have made it this far without prayer. Rickey began his treatments on March 3. He started feeling the side effects from the chemo and radiation well into his second week. I remember thinking about how in the world he would make it seven weeks when he was already having difficulty swallowing. It has been a major challenge for him but he is plowing through it with the Lord’s help. As his caregiver, I have never experienced anything so heart riveting. Watching my husband struggle has been very difficult. I can’t fix it. All I can do is pray. The best way that I can describe it is, right now we are right in the middle of a storm. The waves are raging all around us, but Jesus is in the boat with us. Very soon the waves will calm and the storm will pass. Until then, we will keep moving forward. One of the many things we have learned from this trial is that God is bigger than cancer!!! He is not surprised or taken aback by our circumstances. We are very thankful that He is with us every step of the way.

This week we celebrate the most powerful time of the year, Easter. Thank the Lord for dying on an old rugged cross for us, that we may have eternal life. On the third day He arose from the grave!! Now He sits at the right hand of the Father and He intercedes for you and me. Thank you Jesus!

Have a wonderful Easter 🙂

Karen
