Fast Five - Down East Boys

Fast Five – Down East Boys

The name “The Down East Boys” is practically synonymous with Southern Gospel Music. You’ve probably sat in the pew during one of their concerts, or tapped your toe to one of their tunes as you cruise the highway. The men behind the music are not only talented but are remarkable people who each have an interesting story to tell. Recently, I was privileged to get to know the men who make-up “The Down East Boys.” We sat down to discuss their newest single, which is rocketing-up the charts. I also learned more about their history and even a few fun facts about each of them. I invite you to take a moment to get to know this legendary group on a whole new level with this week’s FAST FIVE.

Stephanie Kelley: While most of our readers are very familiar with your legendary group, please give a brief introduction to someone who might be  new to Southern Gospel music, including a little history of the group.
Ricky Carden: The group was started in the mid-1980s in Eastern, NC. The group transitioned to a full time ministry in 1990 and we have been singing around 175 dates each year since that time. I have been here 30 years this past April. We are on the Sonlite Label.
SK: Recently, your group had a number one song!  Congratulations! Your current single, “Amazing Amounts of Amazing Grace,” just made a big jump to the Top 5. What makes this song so special? Please give a little background on this particular song and how you’ve seen God use it in your ministry.

RC: “Amazing Amounts Of Amazing Grace” has become our fastest growing song, climbing to the top 5 in only 2 months. I feel this is a song that reminds us that everyday is a blessing from God and no matter what comes our way we are blessed more than we could ever deserve. In these difficult days we have experienced as a nation, we are reminded that if we just look around, the Lord displays to us everyday “Amazing Amounts Of Amazing Grace”!
SK: At what point in your life did you know (or at least dream) that you would have such a deliberate and public music ministry? Please share at least one specific way you saw God preparing you for this ministry.

RC: I was captivated by the music at an early age. My Mom and Dad had a group that sang on a part-time basis as I was growing-up, so I spent my early years traveling on a bus from town to town and at the age of 12 I went to a concert that featured the Singing Americans. The group line-up consisted of Danny Funderburk, Ivan Parker, Ed Hill, and Dwayne Burke. That night I realized I wanted to be in a group and share the music with others. It’s been over 30 years since that day and the Lord has blessed me to do what I love!
Daryl Paschal: In January of 2007, the Down East Boys came to my church.  During the concert, my wife, Amanda Paschal, whispered to me, “I can see you singing with those guys.”  God started preparing me then.  In March, three months later, I was offered the job.
Zac Barham: I grew up listening to gospel music loving 4 part harmony and the message behind it, so I began singing at church when i was about 15. He hasn’t stopped blessing me in music from that point on and the rest is history and I thank Him for it every day.
Doug Pittman: When I was in my junior year in high school, I participated in an event called All State Choir. While there I watched several choirs perform, but one really caught my attention. At the last song of this certain choir’s set I noticed that the conductor stepped off of the platform and conducted the choir in the song “Total Praise.” This was odd to me because I was taught that when a conductor stepped onto the platform, it represented to the performers he was in total control of the music that would be made. It hit me while listening to the song that the conductor had not made a mistake by not ascending the platform. He was simply allowing God to be in control of everything that happened during that song. And If I have ever been sure about the Lord speaking to me it was on that day. It was like He said “That’s what I want you to do.”  While I wasn’t always sure about the specific path He wanted me to take, I knew that public music ministry (in some shape or fashion) would be my life’s work. That day the Lord taught me an important lesson, that no matter the situation He is in control and we are simply the vessels He chooses to use to accomplish His will.
SK: You’ve spent a lot of time together as a group and as friends. Please share a little known fun fact about each of the members.

RC: Daryl Paschal is the practical joker of the group. He’s always keeping the guys laughing. Doug Pittman is the computer wizard of the group. He’s the “Yoda” of tech stuff on the bus. And Zac Barham, he’s the talker of the bunch. Zac could make friends with a wall if there is no one else to talk to. He loves people and loves to make friends.
Daryl Paschal:  At one concert, Doug was about to fall in the orchestra pit in front of the stage and a piano saved his life.  I couldn’t sing for the next three songs.
Zac forgot his words one night and turned to us for help. Nobody said a word.
Ricky — we were at the house of a past group member, and we decided to walk outside.  Ricky took the first step and slipped. All we saw was his feet up in the air.  To this day, it is still called Ricky Carden Falls National Park.

Zac Barham: Lets see… I love all the guys like brothers but Daryl needs 20 minutes of quiet before you talk to him when he first wakes up ( found that out quickly haha).

Doug can do anything with electronics you can imagine
Ricky never stops working on and off the bus and has one of the best work ethics I’ve seen
Doug Pittman: Zac and I joke often about how we each secretly would really like to be able to sing each other’s part.
Ricky thinks he is quite the dancer. He’s constantly showing off all his new moves on the bus.
Daryl and I share a love of 70’s and 80’s music. If you stick around the bus long enough, you are bound to hear some of those old hits!
The name "The Down East Boys" is practically synonymous with Southern Gospel Music. You've probably sat in the pew during one of their concerts, or tapped your toe to one of their tunes

SK: Because of the pandemic, so much of our lives have changed. What positive things have resulted from the pandemic in both your personal and professional lives? Please share your plans for future projects and how you’ve had to modify those changes due to pandemic restrictions.

RC: In the middle of March, we were shut down due to the pandemic. We thought in a few weeks we would be back on the road, but as it turns out we have been limited to just a few dates since then. In 30 years of singing I had never been home for more than 3 or 4 days a week. Weekends were something I had never experienced at home.  It has certainly  been a challenge financially for all the guys, but it has been nice to spend a summer at home with my wife and kids. We have had time to do family things that normally we could not do. Hopefully sooner than later we will be back on the road and ready to share our new music from our new project “Faithful Still” that was released in May.
SK: Thank you to Ricky Carden, Daryl Paschal, Zac Barham and Doug Pittman for sharing your stories with us.
I’ve enjoyed getting to know the people behind the voices of the Down East Boys and I hope that you have too. Be sure to request, “Amazing Amounts of Amazing Grace” from your favorite Southern Gospel radio station and be sure to check-out the Down East Boys on your favorite social media platform.

Get in the Christmas spirit with albums from the Down East Boys, 11th Hour and Master’s Voice

Written by Staff on August 18, 2019 – 10:51 am -

Down East Boys to appear at Creekside 2019

Down East Boys, who will appear at Creekside 2019, have released a new Christmas album

Arden, North Carolina (August 16, 2019) — Horizon and Sonlite artists are sharing the true meaning of Christmas and celebrating the season by using their music ministries to tell the story of Christ’s birth and inspire reverence toward His coming.

With this in mind, the Down East Boys11th Hour and Master’s Voice are releasing Christmas albums on October 11. All are available for pre-order now.

Down East Boys, Comfort And Joy

DEB ChristmasThe Down East Boys are sharing the nativity story on Comfort And Joy, their Christmas EP featuring classic songs, smooth harmonies and a high-energy medley. The voices of lead Ricky Carden, baritone Daryl Paschal, bass Zac Barham and tenor Doug Pittman set the tone for a season of rejoicing in Christ’s birth.

Beginning with the title track, this collection reminds that Christmas is about celebrating Christ’s birth and the joy and salvation it brought — and still brings us. The lyrics of “Comfort And Joy” say each year, Jesus makes the weary world rejoice, and we should praise Him.
“Glorious Impossible” follows, recounting the miraculous nativity story, telling us to open our hearts and souls to receive His love. The Down East Boys’ rendition of the classic “Little Drummer Boy” is joyful in its message. With happy hearts, we can serve Jesus with whatever gifts we have, no matter how small they seem. The collection also features an upbeat, quartet version of “Children Go Where I Send Thee” and a Celtic feel to the old world tune “Wexford Carol.”
Comfort And Joy closes with “Carol Of The Bells Medley,” a festive, high-energy song that shows the Down East Boys’ vocal talent. The voices come together to create a moving medley, that ends on the note, “Christmas is here!”
Pre-order Comfort And Joy HERE.

11th Hour Christmas11th Hour, The Greatest Gift

Capturing the wonder and awe of the Christmas season, 11th Hour’s The Greatest Gift features familiar, upbeat and joyful songs that spread the news of Christ’s birth.

Beginning with a festive, “Angels We Have Heard On High,” this album immediately shows 11th Hour’s vocal talent. With soprano Amber Eppinette taking lead, the song sets the tone of joyful anticipation and celebration during Christmas.

Alto Jaquita Lindsey sings lead on the somber “What Child Is This,” sharing the Biblical story of Christmas and inspiring reverence toward the miraculous birth of Christ. On “Home For The Holidays,” “Christmas Medley – Winter Wonderland, Sleigh Ride, White Christmas,” and “Go Tell It On The Mountain,” tenor Logan Smith’s fresh lead vocals bring holiday cheer and excitement on these traditional Christmas songs. “Joy To The World” embraces the overwhelming happiness Earth felt when Christ was born, while “O Holy Night” is a moment of stillness for quiet worship.

The album closes with the title track, written by Allan Eppinette. It’s a moving reminder that God sending Jesus to die for our sins and bring salvation will be the greatest gift we ever receive.

Filled with a blend of familiar Christmas songs and hymns, 11th Hour’s The Greatest Gift provides a joyful soundtrack for the season that celebrates family and fun, but keeps the true meaning of Christmas.

Pre-order The Greatest Gift HERE.

Masters Voice ChristmasMaster’s Voice, The Season To Sing

Master’s Voice brings a traditional quartet style to The Season To Sing, a Christmas album that tells the story of Christ’s birth and the meaning it holds for all of our lives. With only a few traditional Christmas songs, Master’s Voice captures the spirit of the season with new music about finding joy in life because of salvation.

The album begins with “The Season To Sing,” an upbeat song about angels announcing the arrival of Christ, moving people to rejoice and celebrate this moment of joy.

“How Many Kings,” “Reaching” and “Come Make A Place In Me” capture how amazing and once in a lifetime God and Jesus are, and how their love knows no bounds, filling the emptiness in our hearts whenever we need it. “Still Makes Me Sing,” with an upbeat driving feel, details the endless happiness Christ’s birth brought to Earth.

“From Bethlehem to Calvary” and “Beautiful Star of Bethlehem” share stories of Christ’s birth and life on Earth. He brought light to those who needed it, and continually guides people through life to learn and grow through Him.

A few traditional songs, “Silent Night,” “Go Tell It On The Mountain” and “I’ll Be Home From Christmas” complete the collection, adding reverence and joy to the Christmas season.

With every song sharing the joy, awe and wonder of Christ’s birth, The Season To Sing is a timeless, Southern Gospel Christmas collection from Master’s Voice.

Pre-order The Season To Sing HERE.

Creekside, Where Family & Faith Come Together

Written by scoopsnews on April 1, 2019 – 8:42 am -

Creekside Gospel Music Convention is a convention like no other. The folks pictured above are the core of making this event possible.

They came, they participated, and they got the t-shirt to prove it!

Here’s what a few folks are saying about Creekside 2019:

Ricky Carden, Down East Boys said “I am excited to be a part of Creekside 2019.”  “I have watched this event grow over the past few years and am honored to be included in the great list of artists!”

Down East Boys to appear at Creekside 2019

Richard Hyssong , Hyssong notes, “We are looking forward to returning to Creekside 2019. Our family will be singing our radio hits along with playing our brass instruments. We look forward to seeing old friends and meeting many new ones as well.”

Rob Patz and Richard Hyssong of the Hyssongs

And finally, Rob Patz, owner of Creekside Gospel Music Convention adds, as I was writing this, I begin to think of what all went into the planning process of the first year of Creekside; how unprepared I really was and how awesome God was to step in and bring people of value from day one who would help with everything from seating the people to arranging the midnight prayer time.
So today, I want to share with you my heart. I want to tell you a little bit about what I hope you experience this year when you come and visit us for Creekside 2019.

I want you to experience the friendships that are cultivated during this time. You’re going to get the opportunity to meet new artists and new fans; people that you may never have heard of before. My prayer is that the time you leave this week they will be like old friends.

I hope you enjoy the experience of listening to new music and hearing new speakers. I hope above all that during the time we’re together for four and a half days, that we point you in the direction of Christ. We can spend an entire year planning an event, but that event will fall short if we don’t point you to Christ and a personal relationship with him.

During the next few weeks, you will see items on social media about everything that we are doing as we prepare. In my head, I began counting down the days several months ago. I’m ready to see what God has in store. I believe there is going to be a move of God and I hope to see you there!

Creekside 2019 will be held in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., Oct. 27 – 31. The event features the 2019 Diamond Awards, daily showcases and evening concerts, Christian Country at The Creek, and Midnight Prayer. For more information on lodging, VIP tickets, and convention details, contact Rob Patz at rob@sgnscoops.com, or at 360-933-0741. For news and event updates, click on the Creekside Facebook page.

Arden, North Carolina (November 1, 2018) – Sonlite Records and the Down East Boys have teamed up with Singing News Radio and Bible League International to get Bibles into the hands of new Christians around the world through the League’s ‘Til The Whole World Knows campaign.

Throughout the month of November, the first 50 people who donate $50 or more to Bible League International will receive a copy of the Down East Boys’ latest album, One Day In The Past, which features their hit single, “Beat Up Bible.”

“As Singing News Radio continues to work with Bible League International to buy Bibles and put them out to new Christians across the globe, we felt a perfect tie-in was the Down East Boys song, ‘Beat Up Bible.’ We are so pleased to have the Down East Boys and Sonlite Records working with us in November to give copies of their project One Day In The Past to some of our donors,” says Greg Goodman from Singing News Radio. “In order to achieve a beat-up Bible, you have to place it in the hands of someone who is going to use it and gather all the knowledge they can from it. We know that is the work that Bible League is doing daily!”

Greg Bentley from Crossroads said joining the effort to spread God’s word was a no brainer, especially because “Beat Up Bible” was a perfect match for the campaign.

“I’ve heard many stories of families and churches in foreign countries sharing one copy of The Bible between many people because they do not have the resources to have their own copy. And how it becomes tattered and torn from the use,” says Bentley. “To be able to team up with the Bible League and Singing News in this effort just seemed like the icing on top of the cake since the song ‘Beat Up Bible’ will be the #1 song for the upcoming December chart. To be a part of getting the message around the world is part of our goal. We are thrilled to contribute to such a great cause.”

Those interested in contributing can do so on the Singing News Radio website, by clicking on the Bible League International link.

Down East Boys release One Day In The Past

Arden, NC.  –  After more than 30 years of ministry, the Down East Boys’ latest album, One Day In The Past, is available now on Sonlite Records.

With songs about praising the Lord and preaching the good news, One Day In The Past reminds followers of Christ to get back to basics — remember what God has done and can do for you, give Him glory, and tell others His story.

The message is built on tradition, a theme the Down East Boys carry through One Day In The Past. “Beat Up Bible,” the first single, which has already reached the top 5 on the national charts in just three months, is a rich, heartfelt rendition of the popular Little Big Town song that paints the picture of a “worn out and torn up” book used by generations to teach the value of prayer and unwavering trust in God.

“This song takes me back to my grandparents and the Christian heritage they showed to me,” says lead singer Ricky Carden. “Their Bibles are worn and tattered from the many hours spent studying the word. We need more beat up Bibles in our homes.”

“Testimony Time,” an upbeat driving tune written by Sandy Knight, tells of people being unafraid to tell what God has done for them. “Come gather round and spread the news / Tell what the Lord has done for you, and let the whole world know that God is good.”

The album closes with “Beautiful Valley,” a new recording of the Down East Boys’ first chart topping song from 1989 that has all the elements of a great gospel song: a classic country sound and a message that relates easily with almost everyone with notes of faith and perseverance.

As a whole, One Day In The Past carries on the Down East Boys’ ministry with honesty and passion for the Lord.

“This is by far my favorite album we’ve ever recorded, and that’s a lot of albums over almost 30 years. I feel the lineup of guys we have now in combination with the songs and arrangements has made that total connection needed to have a successful album,” says Carden. “We are overwhelmed with the response ‘Beat Up Bible’ is getting, but it’s not just that song. Our hope and prayer is that when listeners hear this new album, they will be taken to a place in their minds when life was simpler, and we focused more on just how great God is to each of us. It’s had that effect on us as a group, and I believe it will to the listeners as well.”
